Default Living in or near the mountians

If you could afford to live anywhere that was in or near mountains, where would you look? I know we can rule out Kalifornia. How do the other states compare? Also rule out any place that has brutal winters.

Real mountains like the Rockies, or big hills like the Smokies? Define “brutal winter.”

Definitely NOT the high country around Boone NC. Too many uneducated rednecks, Brew-tal winters, and idiot drivers from Floriduh clogging the roads. Oh, and the "mountains" are puny compared to the Rockies.

Any mountains in America. Brutal being defined as cold and/or snow for more than 2 months. For example, Knoxville is not in the mountains, but close by so if there is snow in the mountains, you do not have to deal with it if you don't want. I am not familiar with the west to use a western city as an example.

i have no idea...... (looks outside at trees, hills, rocks, and mountains).

i am literally at the very southern end of the Rockies. 7000 feet above sea level, gets down to 0F several times in winter, -10F maybe 2-3 times. moderate amount of snow, but it goes away after a few days.

my neighbor just bought her place about 140 yards south of mine this year for 410K. and another neighbor just finished building his new home on a previously vacant 5 acre lot near the front of the neighborhood. so now we are all built out.

it's 20 min to downtown Santa Fe.

view of home from the mailboxes (about 3/4 mile away) -

home is in the center of the picture.

The bolded rules out a large percentage of the mountains in the U.S.

mountains = elevation. elevation turns into cooler weather most of the year.

a good, warm jacket isn't that expensive.....propane to heat the place.....little different story.

True, but who wants 2 feet of snow for 3 or 4 months? Or below freezing every minute for 3 or 4 months? That is why I said can be near the mountains.I assume Montana is ruled out since it snows from October to April. I like snow, but not for that long.

Cooler is fine. Being lower in elevation, but not down below 2000 feet, is fine too. As long as the mountains are within reasonable driving distance for a day trip.

I spend a lot of my free time near Boone (Blowing Rock). Those uneducated rednecks are some of my best friends. Down to earth and would give you the shirt off their backs. I have nothing but good experiences with the locals. The out of town visitors, not so much.

California was *the* place to be in the ‘60s and ‘70’s… It was a magic time. Everyone thought so. Even the assholes who moved here from 49 other states and helped to turn it into the shit we have now.

California, the geographic location is still a magic place, with some of the best scenery and weather you can find. The people on the other hand, need to be shipped to Martha’s Vineyard.
