Default My car’s 55th birthday didn’t end well

My car was built on July 12th, 1967 (last day of C2 production).

So I took SinDee, the Rat Terrier, on a celebratory ride.

It was 100 degrees but we had the top up and the Vintage Air was blowing cold.

But the fun was short-lived. As we turned onto the street headed for our neighborhood, the car sputtered and died. Coasted to the shoulder. My first thought was the bulkhead connector but all my interior electrical stuff worked. My next thought was the fuel pump. The engine would turn over but wouldn’t start.

I have a fuel pump but there was no way I was going to do that job on the side of the road with a 107 degree heat index. Plus, I didn’t know for sure if the problem really was the fuel pump. My mechanic was only 1/2 mile away so that’s where the flatbed took it.

This is the first time in the 10 years I’ve owned this car that it’s left me stranded.

Birthday pictures below taken at the beginning of our ride.

Steve

Thanks guys.

I also thought about the ballast resistor. One terminal is a little loose. I had a big problem with that in my '74 Plymouth Duster.

Mechanic reports strong gas smell. He started it up with starter spray. Found a gas leak at the carb and a problem with a vacuum hose.

MadInNC - It's stock as far as drive train but it has a lot of creature comforts and safety stuff added:

PS
PB
A/C
Leather seats
Teak wheel
DeWitts combo radiator and electric fan (like I said it was 100 degrees today <LOL>)
Electronic ignition
3-point seat belts
Head rests

I'll post more when I know more.

BTW, not a lot of activity in this forum but it seems like a nice place. I'm coming over from the Corvette Forum where I was a member for 10 years. Some other C1 and C2 guys are moving over here, too.

Take care,
Steve

Sounds like the ignition module in the H.E.I. system very common.

I considered percolation with the heat factor. That’ll cause the carb squirters to dump raw fuel On the intake runners and hence the smell. But “your guy” Bruce will figure it out - none better.

Hey Frank - good to see you over here.

Bruce got the car running but didn’t have any room for my car (you’ve seen his shop) so he offered to follow me home and send his Holley guy to work on it in my garage. But then he said, “No I can’t let you leave here with raw gas leaking out of your carb”.

So he backed his race car out of his garage and put my car in there.

Take care,
Steve

Beautiful car. Glad you were able to find the issue.

Dang, Steve. That was a disappointing end to your outing. Looks like SinDee was digging the ride, though.

Sounds as though it might be as simple as FOD in the needle valve. Good luck with it. Hope it's an easy and quick fix. Inexpensive would be a bonus. Keep us posted.

Live well,

SJW

Thanks, Steve.

Yes, there's definitely something going on at the carb. I'm still suspicious of the fuel pump, though. It's the same pump that was on the car when I bought the car 10 years ago. I have a new fuel pump in the garage. It's the type that doesn't have the pin that "walks out". Generally, I don't like to fix something that isn't broken but I may make an exception in this case.

Take care,
Steve

My first thought as well. I had to lower the floats in the front carb on my '61 a little while ago because of flooding and stalling when the ambient air temps got into the 90's and the engine got to 205 or so after a short park and heat soak. With our ethanol fuels and their 140 degree boiling point, these cars can get finicky. I run points and condenser ignition in every old vehicle I own, as I have for over 45 years now, because I need the reliability. I've fixed too many failed modules and pick up coils to count in my life. Keep us posted!
Frank, great to see you here!!!

Bruce is the best - works on $5 MM Ferraris and always has time to chat and help out guys with old American Classics....when I was trying to figure out how to fix my 63 trailing arm issues he offered to come to my house and help me out on my own lift - luckily I was able to figure out how to completely rebuild the rear end and all components myself.
