My parents moved to Florida with a triple black caddy...

Well under 100k will keep you into the 2015 on time frame then since want it to last @10 years also and not put you in the poor house fixing it.
Depending on your price range have you considered a new small Hyundai or the like with a warranty?

VW Passat TDI. It's a diesel, but gets great mileage. VW Jetta TDI would work for your wife as well.

We bought my wife a 2015 Buick Verano. It's a mid size, 4 door with a 4 cyl. Nice car.

Be amazed how many ALL black cars are in my burb......that and dark gray....get behind the wheel and pass out on a sunny day.....garages down here in my burb are dedicated to other uses, like my driveway was made double wide by previous owner....

I have a new body style '16 Cruze. Other than a water leak due to the rear spoiler that was fixed under warranty, I've had no trouble with it, and it returns real world mid thirties in town and a genuine 40 mpg on highway driving. That's actual pen and paper numbers, not the optimistic numbers proffered by the car's computer. I've never put more than 12 gallons in it and get anywhere from 400-500 miles a tank. Still on the same battery, too.

The only issue for both 1st and 2nd gen Cruze owners could be parts availability going forward.

Edit: The most negative thing I can say about it is, it has the automatic engine shut off (to boost mileage) and there's no way to turn that 'feature' off. Most of the time it probably does its intended job, but can be annoying in stop and go traffic.

They probably don't get good mileage, at least the ones that went through the recall to fix the emissions controls probably don't. Find one that hasn't been fixed maybe?
