Default Today's Tipping Question

We're picking up some sandwich platters, salad trays, etc., this weekend from a local bar/restaurant where frequently go for dinner.

What's the tipping protocol in this situation? When we've had such things delivered we've tipped the delivery guy, but is it expected, or even appropriate, when we're picking up?

There are no servers involved in the pickup; the owner rings us up, we pay him, & carry out our food. Seems odd to tip the owner, but it's my understanding that tips get shared with the kitchen staff, who likely prepared our order.

In that situation, I generally do not tip. The owner should have his pricing set up so that he can pay his people a competitive wage, and make enough profit for himself to make a decent living. Kitchen workers don't generally make the bulk of their living from tips the wait wait staff workers do.

Ever since Covid I tip like I've eaten there, even with takeout. I haven't dropped the habit yet since I've established it.

Someone has to pack up the order, make sure it's all there and correct, add the extra items. Fukkit... tip 'em all, I say... let God sort them out.

we did Outback take out twice in the last few weeks, one came to $47 and change, the other was $45 and change. left the change from a Fiddy for them.

how generous do you want to be? some ballers will double the ticket (bill was $40, they'd tip another $40).

up to you. i'm sure the owner and his family and his employees would never say "oh, it's too much", they might say "thanks".

If I go inside, then I don't tip.

The Firehouse Sub place has you pay online when you order, then the pickup area is not manned; orders with names are already bagged and placed there for you. There's no person to tip.

Local Subway (among others) have added a tip prompt when you pay.

I do not care what kind of a place it is if they ask for tips and give recommended tipping amounts thats a big NoNO to me. You do some work other than ringing up the order I will tip but those signs turn me off. Seeing it on more and more places from real good steakhouses to quickie take outs.

Truth is know if service is good I will tip well, always more that the so called recommended amount. My normal breakfast meal comes to $11.00 even, I leave $4. Thats a hell of a lot better than 15-20% At a good sit down restaurant if they have a recommended amount I leave the lowest number they show. If I did it on my own it would be close to double of what they recommended. I normally use a CC to pay for a meal but leave the tip in cash , that normally is a better deal for the sever, the management cannot play some tricks with the tip money! (and many places do)

No table or delivery service == no tip.

This, if there is the option when ordering. I won’t eat subway because of that whiney liberal soccer dingbat.

There is a local Italian place that produces decent food for this area. Since the scamdemic started, they've been doing takeout only, even though they could open up for dining. The few times we've ordered, the owner has brought the order to the car, and I've always tipped him.

Why? Small business owner. Mom/pop shop that has been established for several decades. Scamdemic almost killed their family owned business.

Now, if it was a chain store, I might not tip in this scenario.

I've been tipping a little extra at restaurants for take out, especially when dine-in was not allowed.

When it comes to my preferred local pizza place, I've always tipped well when picking up my order. The management does a spectacular job of hiring perky, well endowed females to work the counter, most of the time in low-cut shirts.

Normally I wouldn't tip under that circumstance.
If you visit the place frequently and know the individual who brought it to you, that's a judgement call, tipping could bring you some good will there in the future by that person.

The dealership that I bought my car at offers its customers free car washes, as often as you like, for as long as you own the car. Whenever I get the car back, I always tip the porter (quite often the same guy) $5. They know me by name and there have been times I've stopped in on a Saturday and you could tell there was a wait.

I would ask "how long for a car wash?" and they'd say "The wait is over an hour, but we'll have yours back in about 10 minutes." And off it goes. I figure it's around $23-$25 to get it washed elsewhere. So I'm getting off cheap.

But then I start complaining that I haven't got enough time to eat my bagel.

Same here, with no eat in or limited, those who are still working instead of drawing unemployment need those tips
