Default Almost forgot about the Great Blizzard of '78

Starting this day forty years ago,was a whopper of a storm.Had no school for weeks. At my parents house we had no snow the ocean washed away all the snow.
Luckily my dad forgot to shovel a huge snowbank at the left corner of the house and we didn't take in water as it ran down the street. We had a few neighbors at our house as their basements flooded and pipes burst. You could not cross the street until the tides calmed down.
Lots of property and car damage, but we survived.Watch the video as that's my hometown and at the end see how much damage the Shore Drive wall took.

My dad was a firefighter and since people back then owned rear wheel drive cars, the town borrowed snowmobiles to pick up the firefighters and police to get them to work. If a fire would have broke out, who knows how well they would have been able to get to the fire

I had just started working at GE in Lynn Ma on January 30th. I had only been there a week when the storm hit. I was kind of panicking because I couldn't get to work and thought I could lose my new job. Turned out OK, and I went on to a 36 year career there, but I'll never forget that storm!

I was working as a Security guard that storm. I got a call Monday Morning to come in and to be prepared to stay for a day or two. Packed enough food for 4 days and went in.I had one other guy in the building with me from maintenance. We could not get out of the building until Thursday Morning.

We had so much snow we were afraid the ceiling would collapse.

Best thing was I started getting OT after the first 8 hours.

I was living in Huntington NY at the time and worked in Melville.

During the January 78 blizzard that hit Southwest Ohio I was stuck at my girlfriends parents house from Wednesday night to Sunday night.

I had just got married in 1976 and moved to my very first house in Sharon, MA from growing up in Bedford.
I thought going a little South would be a great idea! Nope!
I remember saying something stupid the night of the storm when the temp. was zero, " It's too cold to snow very much"! I was misinformed to say the least! Before it started we already had 19'' on the ground, and we received 44'' more before it was over. The drifts were OVER the top of my ranch style house! There was a large field behind and that's where the wind came from. We did not get out of work until about 3:00PM and I had to fight my way home from Wrentham on Rt 1. My wife had to come south on 128, and she was very lucky to get off right before the highway shut down with stranded cars. Those that did not make it were in for it! Lot's of sad story's for those poor folks!
My grandmother died in that storm, of unrelated causes, and my brother had to get a permit to drive all of us to the service because of the driving ban.
That was one wicked storm!
