Default Have you ever known a murderer?

At this point in my life, I've known a few. 3 from back in Virginia, and one down here. The 3 in Va, were along the lines of a casual acquaintance, and the one here in Ga, worked in my military unit, and had been in my house. I sold him a Harley that I had bought to flip. Sort of weirds me out sometime thinking about having known these folks. They never uttered an unkind word to me. Makes you wonder what makes people snap.

One.

A friend of my dads from back in the day. He drove to his brothers workplace and shot him in the parking lot. He then fled the area and offed himself when the police were closing in. It was over money. He was a neat guy back in the day, but alcohol and financial problems made him go over the edge.

I've known 2 people that were murdered as well.

Shit. Forgot one.

Kid I used to babysit when I myself was a kid murdered his girlfriends mom. So, I didn't really know him as an adult, but I remember him as a baby. He was a normal healthy and happy baby. Sad.

Yes. In the late 70s I worked with a guy who was on a work release parole program from an armed robbery. Within one month after being released he held up a store and blew an 80 year old lady's head off. If he's still alive, he's doing life without parole. When I knew him he said very time he committed a crime he was so blind drunk he didn't even have any memory of it.

Only one. He was my first cousin. His dad was killed working on an electrical line; his mother eventually remarried. His new step-dad was a drunk and a wife abuser. One night he came home drunk and started beating her; my cousin, about age 15 a the time, took a .38 out of a drawer and blew his stepdad away.

His mom took the rap for the murder but was never charged. This was back before the day of fingerprints and checking for powder residue. My cousin turned into a drunk and a philanderer and died at an early age of lung cancer.

I always cut him slack because I knew what a trauma killing someone must be and what horrible memories he must have had.

Kind of a frontier justice story...

My grandfather grew up on a farm in Central Missouri. He was born in 1922, and lived there through the early 40's when he enlisted in the Army. "The Farm" as everybody in my family called it, was originally homesteaded in the early 1800's and was in our family from the early 19th Century until about 1978 when it was sadly sold.

This place is really in the middle of nowhere, even today. Even into the 60's the closest town, Belle, still had hitching posts along the main drag.

When my grandfather was still alive he told us that back when he was a kid that undesirables or people that messed up would just "disappear". If somebody was wronged or somebody pissed somebody off, you would simply never see them again.

So, getting away with murder wasn't exactly hard back then. Somebody was a problem, they would get whacked and buried in a field or the woods.

The guy who died was out with his buddies during his bachelor party ( yes, the night before he was to be married ). He saw the murderer who owed him money.

When he went up to the car window, the murderer "flashed a knife" that pierced his heart.

Four.
First time was I guy I knew in my late teens/early twenties. Me and a couple of friends met these two guys and became friends with them. Over the next couple of years we spent a lot of time at one of them's house, uh, "partaking" (the other lived next door). The guy next door moved away and we later heard he killed two people in Atlanta and cut them up. Went to prison.

Second guy was a casual acquaintance. We did a little business together in the early eighties. He ended up getting shot on the head and killed in the front yard of his house over a drug deal gone wrong.

Third guy I worked with. He was a supervisor at the plant I worked at in Dalton, GA, in the late eighties/late nineties. Didn't know him well, just a coworker. About seven/eight years ago his much younger wife decided she wanted a divorce. He killed her and her grandfather and disfigured her body. He's in jail now.

Fourth time was a friend. I had known him since we were in grade school in the early seventies. Not real close, but hung out together off and on over the years. About three years ago he found out his long time girlfriend had contracted cancer. A year later apparently he decided that was enough for both of them. He shot her and then himself. I saw him last just a couple of weeks before. He seemed fine, in good spirits. Never saw it coming. He was the most laid back guy you'd ever meet and a local legend as a guitar player.
I would have never thought him capable of such an act.

I know one and one who seemed to be trying.

The one who was trying was a acquaintance in my professional association who decided to go on a shooting spree along a local freeway. He hit several cars during his stint but never killed anyone and is now serving a long time as he was convicted of terrorism.

A former coworker and social acquaintance - went to the bar together, various parties, etc. killed his wife and two kids then drove the wrong way down a freeway and collided head on killing himself and the driver of the other car
