Old Magazines
I was looking back at some of my dad’s old collection of magazines from the ‘60’s & ‘70’s and realized how they have changed compared to the current ones. They were Popular Mechanics, Popular Science, Mechanix Illustrated, and Science and Mechanics. I think the only two still publishing are Popular Mechanics and Popular Science. I was surprised to see that they had so many DIY Plans and Projects back then. One issue that particularly caught my eye was the Popular Mechanics Issue of March 1970.
It had all of the following DIY plans in this one issue 1- Build This Pontoon Fun Raft 2- Handy Tune-up Meter for Your Car 3- Apartment Workshop in 4 Feet of Space 4- Build This Handsome Cookout Gazebo 5- Three Footstools 6- Tray for Your Best Silverware 7- Saddle-Seat Homework Desk 8- Ready-Made Coffee Table 9- Triplex Lamp 10- Mobile Laundry Counter 11- Colonial-Style Sweetheart Chair On top of all that the magazine had the following articles as well as many more: 1- Two Easy Ways to Make Borderless Prints 2- How to Work with Plastic Laminates 3- How to Pick a Phono Pickup Cartridge 4- How to Pick a Marina 5- Be Your Own Boat Tester 6- How To Do a Complete Brake System Checkout 7- The ABC’s of Front Ends & Steering 8- Ornamental Scrollwork You Can Do at Home 9- America’s Supersecret Quiet Plane 10- Submarine Icebreaker for Arctic Oil? 11- What Valiant Owners Say About the Duster 12- Dan Gurney Answers Questions About Racing and Driving The old magazine format was 6 ½ “ x 9 “ compared to the newer ones 8” x 11”. On top of all this the magazine was 236 pages and cost 50 cents. |

I've got PB going back to the sixties, and once in a while I get a kick out of looking at the advertisements in them. .....then I check out the playmates and think of how they probably look today.
