They likely knew you were a tire kicker, they followed you because the sales manager will be screaming at them if they ignore someone on the lot.

No "likely" about it. I was clear on that point. I am not here t buy anything just looking.

If I was that salesman's manager I'd kick his ass for following me instead of a potential customer.

The sales manager doesn’t care that you’re a tire kicker. Everyone coming on the lot says they’re just looking.

Most likely - no. Trust me, you aren't out-smarting a car dealer; if the package doesn't work for them, they won't do it. If they can convince you that you "got them" and have you grinning while signing the paperwork its a win-win.

SOME techniques can net you savings of course, buying near the end of the month when a dealer is trying to make his "numbers" is one instance and buying when most other buyers are "out of the market". Say, shortly after Christmas when financially "tapped out" consumers are staying home and rebuilding their resources.

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong..
"I'm just looking" is what 70% of car buyers say before a purchase...

The other dynamic is that most sales managers will fire a salesman that doesn't press the sale or engage customers to determine their desires. So, of course, they follow you around if they want to stay employed.

Interesting. How would I let them know I am dead serious about NOT buying anything? I can't look much poorer than I naturally look.

This is my motivation to shop there and buy elsewhere. I despise being shadowed. Especially by some numb-nuts that doesn't know fuel injection from beef injection. I have asked them questions about vehicles just to be entertained by the answer.

By not going there in the first place. You go to a titty bar to look around, you go to a car dealer to buy a car.

It’s not about outsmarting, it’s about maintaining your own control of the deal so it stays in proper form for the buyer to make sense of it. That’s why I keep each part of the deal separate, new car and it’s negotiation, then introduce the trade if there is one, and lastly the financing. It’s such a joke when the sales guy asks what you need your payment to be , then the finance guy asks where he needs to keep your payment , and they go cross-eyed when I tell them that I don’t care, I want the lowest interest rate possible that my credit warrants. Before I go on the lot I know what my credit score is and I know within reason what my trade is worth. I usually do well as long as I don’t get emotionally attached to new ride.

I was bored one Saturday and it just happened to be at the end of the month, I went to the jeep dealer to see if they had an SRT GC and they did in the showroom . They tried so hard to get me to agree to test drive and I said no, leave it inside . I worked the deal before I drove it , didn’t drive it until deal was done. I got what I needed out of all parts of the deal. I was very happy when I got in the GC and even happier on the way home because it was better than I had expected.

Buying a vehicle is a very binary event.

This is what I will pay for the vehicle. Do we have a deal? Y or N

End of story. People that spend hours in the process are fools.
