Default Movie goers opinion...3D, IMAX, D-BOX..cool or stupid gimmick

So what say you?

I am a traditionalist....If there is a film I am really intrested in, I usually skip all that crap and watch it in a regular theater.

Chick I have been going out with (no pic's) swears the whole D-box experience is awesome. D-box We both really want to see The Avengers, but she REALLY wanted to see it with all the extra crap.

My only experience with it is a demo of the Avengers trailer on a 60" tv. It was fun for the trailer, but I'm worried it will take away from the movie watching experience over the course of the film.

Anyway, I already picked up Avengers tix for tonight...Imax,3D, D-box....it will either be awesome or the suckage, figured I'd give it a try......better be pretty damn cool for $20 a ticket!

Will report back with my opinion.

I'm a big fan of all three, plus 48fps or 60fps projection.

Any time you add something to the cinema experience there will be an adjustment period, but I believe that these will be SOP for theaters in the future.

I don't like 3D. Saw the last Transformers movie in 3D and I hated it (3D not the movie). I don't wear glasses and they were small and kept seeing the frames. The glasses darkened up the movie too much. I'd lift them up and it would brighten up a lot and looked better. Haven't seen a movie at an IMax and have no idea what dbox is.

I agree. With what is available for the home experince, theaters must (and will) continue to raise the bar.

It wasn't the glasses. The film industry is currently battling to get theater owners to show 3D films at the correct lumens. The theater owners have been turning down the brightness for decades, in an effort to save money on equipment maintanence. 3D films are supposed to be shown at a greater brightness than conventional films, so you if have a theater that has turned their stuff down for the 2D films, then the 3D will be dim and dingy.

That and Micheal Bay sucks at making movies, 3D ones especially.

3D films should appear every bit as bright and clear as a conventional film, even through the glasses, and if it doesn't, tell them you know why, and get your money back.

The managers of my local know me by name, and they hate to see me coming. I'm pretty sure that when they do see me, they make sure their shit is correct.

I love 3D, but it's not utilized as much as it could be.

To me, many of the 3D films just have glimmers of 3D Brilliance while for most of the film it just adds a little depth.

Add I agree with the brightness thing. We found ourselves taking the glasses off during non action scenes.

It has to do with the technology they use to create the 3D effect. They use polarizers which will block out some light and force your brain into perceiving the image as leaping out at you. Polarizers block out light that isn't traveling in that specific region, so there is less light entering into your eye.

I will never get that style 3D experience at my house. I say it's worth it to see it in Imax 3d if available, at the theater.

I don't need a mechanical rig moving my seat around. That's what properly tuned subwoofers are supposed to be for.

Plus I hate theaters.

Completely depends on the film and the execution.

I saw Hugo in 2D and didn't feel like I missed a thing but, Scorsese shot it in 3D, said he loved the experience and he'd never do another film that wasn't 3D. That's a pretty huge supporter for the technique.

I'm with Apex on Tranformers - 3D just made that cluster**** even more undecipherable. But I thought it added a lot to Avengers. It was subtle and not in your face and behind your ears every chance.

For me it comes down to: is it a visual feast of a story - animation or CGI? Do the 3D. Is it a character driven drama or comedy? 2D or wait for the PPV. I'm not thinking 3D would add a great deal to Hangover 3, but I could be frighteningly wrong about that.

It can also make a big difference if the film was shot in 3D, or converted to 3D in post production. IIRC, the Transformers films were post-converted, as were both Clash Of The Titans films, possibly the worst 3D films made to date.

If the film was post-converted and is offered in 2D... see the 2D.

There is, but its the old red/blue-glasses-type. If you've got glasses on hand, xvideos and xhamster both have examples.

that's cool to know. I think 3D can add or take away from the film depending on the movie. I want to see the avengers in 3D, but i don't really mind to see it in regular 2d either. If i remember right the last movie I saw in 3d was chronicle, and the damn theater started it in 2nd. To my amazement i look around me.. and people are wearing their 3D glasses, while watching the 2nd movie. True facepalm moment I went and complained and they restarted the film
