The AMX is actually the sport version of the Javelin, so it is based on the same design and platform but modified to improve its speed and performance. So, in short, the AMX is not the same as the base-level Javelin, but it is still a Javelin in name.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMC_AMX
According to leftist agit-prop Wikipedia, while AMX was based on the Javelin, it was sold as a stand along AMX, not an options package on a Javelin, at least at some point during it's sales run.

I'm thinking this is akin to Bonnevilles and the GTO? Then again, Wiki is not the most trustworthy source.

'68-70, the AMX was it's own model, not a Javelin. It was a 2 seat car, much shorter than the Javelin.

From 71-on though (this body style), Steve is correct, the AMX was no longer a standalone model, just the name applied to the Javelin as a performance option pkg.

The car pictured IS a Javelin, but is also an AMX, given the rear spoiler. The base Javelin did not have that.

THIS^^^^. Engines from the 243 V8 all the way to the 401 V8. Garden variety Javelins from '71-'74 didn't have the AMX trim. Easy to tell them apart. If you're a car guy.

Even if you couldnt see the AMX badging, the cowl induction hood and tall rear spoiler was easy to identify, car guy or not.

Javelin/Camaro
SST/RS
AMX/SS
304, 360, 390, and 401 C.I. (post 1970)
Also a SC 360.
14inch rims.

Yes, there were stand alone Javelins in 68 and 69.
AMX being a two seater like the vettes.

I had a spare trunk lid with a luggage rack I'd remove for the track.
I also removed the giant rims for the track, ran 60's up front, and N50's rear to fill the bulging fender wells.

Not that I've ever heard.
American Motors Experimental = AMX

After 1974 there was ugly(er) AMXs.
AMC Spirit and AMC Concord each had an AMX, even a 4x4 model.

Yeah, they were tiny cars by standards of the day. Guy in high school had one, only saw it a few times, heard that it did wheelies.

IIRC--AMX had a shorter WB than the vettes.
I had two friends with a 69...the one with the ladder bars would barely lift the tires off of the pavement...not a "wheelie" per se.
The other would just fry rubber for blocks.

I had a 1973 Gremlin X in high school. Tiny, short WB, ultra-light car with a 304 V8. I had to work extra hours to buy new back tires every few months.
