Default The Rong Path

As some of you know, we breed and show dogs. We also work with kids on Tuesday nights in a Junior Handling program.

One of the girls we have become very fond of got a DWI last week. She's 16. Her 14 year old sister was in the vehicle with her, along with two 18 year old guys.

The girls have a terrible home life. A lot of us at school have put a fair amount of effort into these two sister. I've sent them to NY twice, they have traveled with us, etc. My wife and I are pretty upset/pissed.

Anyone have any history with underage DWI's? What are these kids facing, other than a severe ass chewing from us?

(This is the abridged version of all this BTW)

In Georgia, the penalties would be pretty stiff.

- Loss of drivers license until age 21
- Total fines of about 10k (fines, court costs, and probation expense)
- 12 months in jail (usually allowed to serve under supervised probation)

This all depends on her attitude and cooperation. I bet the authorities will be very curious where she got the alcohol.

This would be a messy situation for any teen.

The girls got the beer at a graduation party they were attending with the 18 year old dudes.

It was also 2:00am, past curfew, too many people in the car, open bottle and a cooler for good measure. The younger sister also failed a breathalyzer even though she wasn't driving. MN has a "Zero Tolerence" law. They could have blown a .0000001 and it would be a fail.

She's had her license two weeks.

I think a night in jail would cure any future problems.

Who the fuk knows.

You know why she was driving that night? The 18 year old guys were too drunk, so she said: "I have a license! I'll drive!"

Hopefully this will be a hard earned lesson that will keep her from making this kind of poor judgment in the future. Luckily nobody was hurt.

Damn Thomas, sorry about the bad news. Really sucks when you're trying to help a young person to a better life.
They are bound to make some dumb mistakes, but sometimes they really step in a deep pile.

I did volunteer work with troubled teens for 15 years in NY/NJ.
Keep up the strong love; they'll ALWAYS remember it. They may not tell you, and they sure as hell don't appreciate it at the time.

I still get calls every once in a while from "kids" I used to help. Pretty amazing to be thanked by a 30something year old so many years later.

My wife and I discussed this last night. We have no plans to throw in the towel. We really felt we set good examples and some of our coaching helped. The dogs are just side sauce to the REAL things we try to help them with.

It blows me away to see them doing network interviews at Westmnster, THREE of them, and then they make decisions like this. I can't quite marry the two things together.

Thanks for the advice BTW.

Think about it....the difference between those girls and most of VB is that they got caught, whereas most of VB probably got lucky.

Goody-two-shoes and teatotalers, feel free to cast the first stone, here.

.09 I believe. When they took her to the police station they also urine tested her. If she's smoked up in the last few weeks, that's gonna come up too.

I did a LOT of shit at that age. Drinking and driving wasn't one of them.

Had she done that when we were kids, she would have gotten a minor in possession traffic ticket (for the booze) and driven home.

In Texas, anyway, around that time, I don't even think there was an open container law.

They are really fortunate to have somebody in the corner like you two. I can only guess they sure as hell don't have that at home.

In almost every case I remember it was; show me a troubled kid and I'll show you parent(s) who aren't there or shouldn't be.

Never? Really? Not even at .08? .08 is easy with 3 beers. Never rode with a friend who had had a few too many?

here, let me help you out:

Seriously, though, it isn't like these girls did something super horrible, terrible and unforgivable. They made a mistake, got busted for it, and thankfully, as minors, can learn from it without having it follow them around the rest of their lives.

They didn't do anything worse than GWB, and he was elected president. Their future is still bright, and thanks for mentoring the next generation!

When I was of similar age, here they would have most likely had them pour the booze out or, more likely, transfer the contents of the cooler to the trunk of the police car, given a warning or possibly a minor in possession, and followed them home (assuming there was a licensed driver who wasn't totally blotto.) It's possible that the officer would go to the door with them and talk to the parents.

They just got caught. Lord knows me and my friends did our share of stupid crap.

Just like my step brother. He got busted around 19 or so for doing something INCREDIBLY stupid. My mother and his father were all aghast. I was thinking to myself, shit I'm glad I never got caught doing some of things I did. His deal would have seemed like a day at church.

They'll get through it and will turn out to be better people for it. Don't lose your faith in them because they're stupid teenagers.
