I've always adored the early Gamera films for one simple reason; they're INSANE. Monster blood spraying everywhere, dismemberments, eviscerations, Monster Gymnastics. In the 60's and 70's Gamera was like Godzilla on crack.

Not a series of films you watch back to back, but you pop one in once in a while when you need reassurance that the Japanese are a fk'd up people, as if tentacle hentai, used panties vending machines and fart sniffing subway creeps weren't enough of an indication...

I think the residual radiation from two ground zero atomic blasts might have something to do with it.

Part of the trend towards "Good Guy Godzilla" was simply Toho following the audience, but there is no denying that the Japanese have taken the character to heart. One of my favorite things about the franchise is the competition between Japanese cities to be "attacked" by G in whatever movie is next. It is a real point of pride to be chosen.

As for America's cinema hero, I don't think we actually have one character for a hero, rather a character type, the everyman hero. Luke Skywalker, Rocky Balboa, Police Chief Martin Brody, Sam Witwicky, Frodo Baggins... we love to watch a regular Joe get into the shit and then dig his way out, getting the girl along the way and proving that through purity of intent and acknowledgment of flaws, anyone can do anything. It is the cinematic embodiment of the American Dream... sadly, the cinema seems to be the last place that dream lives.
