Default Don't be like me and forget to change your cabin pollen filter...

Until you find that your vehicle's AC is not a-workin' very goodly.

I stopped using the Acura service dept because it was an hour drive and the "free oil change" was always $300+ every time I went. They did always change the cabin air filter, charging me over $100 each time. I did it myself for $23. I will never pay to have something so basic done ever again, it was just easy to take it there and have them do the stuff when it was time. This is about two years worth of use. Not much mileage really, perhaps 15k in that time.

Also pried the console covers off and am having leather put on them. Acura really hosed up on those things, using super thin fake leather vinyl crap that literally dissolves and shreds after about five years. And it's not covered under warranty, which really pisses me off because honestly their warranty did absolutely nothing for me whatsoever. If something major would have happened, I guess it would, but you'd think an obvious defect like that would be covered (I had a 7-year warranty keep in mind.) You have to pry them off with screwdrivers, really sorta scary, and I'm taking it to the upholstery guy because I know I'd screw up trying to do it myself.

When you examine them, Warranty's only cover what's likely not to happen, especially in the time frame of the warranty. Extended warranties are throwing your money away.

I got nailed for that expen$ive filter change the last time I took my MDX in for its recommended service; won't happen again.

I can't complain about our dealer's service department too much though. A while back I had it in for an oil change & tire rotation, and complained that the front brakes shuddered, like bad rotors, when slowing down. He confirmed that, and gave me some ~$300-400 price to replace everything, since it wasn't under warranty. I told him I'd pick up the car & think about it. He called back later & said he got the factory to do a "good will" replacement & it didn't cost me anything. So that was good.

My old truck doesn't have any filter....in fact it doesn't have anything to stop crap from falling down in front of the heater core. I fished out all kinds of debris, then vacuumed out the rest when I changed the heater motor. Debris broke the impeller to bits!

Yeah, I mean we'd drive up to Springfield, drop my MDX off at Acura, they'd give me a really nice loaner car (usually a brand new MDX or TL), detail the vehicle decently (wash, hand dry, vacuum, windows/leather), change the oil and filter for "free", and then charge me $300 for other filters, tire rotation, transmission fluid/differential oil, whatever. But it got old. Local Honda dealer changed my oil/filter with synthetic and rotated the tires for $45. Can't beat that, and it's just a few miles from my house instead of 70 miles.

Just changed my engine air filter a few minutes ago. It...didn't look great.

That looks worse than the one I pulled out of my C6 a couple of months ago, I'm not sure it was ever changed in the 52K miles before that, including the three years and roughly 10K miles I've owned it

I learned my lesson about cabin filters a long time ago. I took a Jag to the dealer to get them to replace some stings, including the engine air filter. I neglected to say engine air filter, so the dealer tried to replace the cabin air filter. It didn't have one. Dealer managed to ruin one windshield wiper getting it off though. (That how you would gain access to the cabin filter...if it had one.)

I honestly don't know if they ever actually changed it. I mean, they said they did, and even when it was clogged up it blew plenty of air in the cabin. But it got bad enough that it messed with a sensor or three and started blowing hot air, then outside air, then a burst of cold, then outside air... And it acted up during a downpour and my windows started fogging up like crazy while I was on I-44 in super heavy traffic going 75 MPH thinking WTF?

Pro tip:
Be sure to not put it in up-side down or it'll stink up the cabin.

I purchased my 01 Suburban in 05. I could never find where the "alleged" cabin filter was.

LAST YEAR when the Suburban went in for the annual state inspection, I asked my mechanic to see if it had one and to change it if it did.

It was packed with dog hair

Suburban had about 210K on it then and had 56K on it when I bought it in 05

Well, 20 months later I put in a new cabin air filter. The one I put in 20 months ago looked pretty much perfectly fine (10 times better than the one in my photo) but I put in a new one anyway. Got a two-pack of activated carbon filters for $13. So not only did Acura Springfield not change my cabin air filter - ever - they charged me for a new one every single time I got my "free" oil change and tire rotation. BTW, my local Honda dealer does the synthetic oil/filter and rotation thing for $46.

They told me at the BMW dealer last year that mine was due to be changed. I choked a little bit when they told me the price. On a good note, the AC worked well last summer. Fortunately all the power windows & bone thrower work in case the AC doesn't this summer.

I bought K&N Cabin Air Filters for the Tacoma and Mustang. I clean them out and "recharge" them once a year.
