I told my son that, don't get stuck ina structural welding job it'll suck. Get good at TIG doing aluminum and stainless and find an inside fab job. Luckily he's really good at stainless and getting good at aluminum.

Fab shops ain't all they're cracked up to be. Many (MOST) of them run that f'n squirt gun all day. That's a ten mile spool of wire. Hood down - WELD! ALL. DAY.

Wellllllllllllllllllllllllll...in my case, the fab shop is where the A/C was...

Visualize; 98* day, 100% humidity, crawl inside 48" casing to chip slag so inspectors can Xray without false cracks....and no no0bs/apprentices around.

At one point I offered to go to Canada for 2 mos. for pipeline work...things got changed around to Jan. and I didn't go.
The guys that did go came back with stories of spending all their ca$h on warm clothes within days of arriving, skin sticking to cold metal, frostbite toes in steel toe boots, torch hoses snapping because brittle, crazy stuff like that.

I got out of the oilfield and got into refrigeration, it pairs well with south Louisiana and the gulf coast.

Ever been so good at your job they don't advance you?
My last few years before I retired I worked in a large fab shop. I had a kind of unique position there. I basically worked as a fitter with 3 to 10 welders. Wow, what a job trying to keep a bunch of welders happy!

I was the best fork lift operator at the shop, so I was the "outside man". I picked out the pipe and fittings needed and brought them into the shop. Cut to measure, tuned up the bevels and if I had time tacked them up and then delivered to the dedicated welders. (mostly MIG) Cut and threaded screw pipe, worked on the Vic stuff. and cut most of the steel needed for supports, hangers, stairs and decks. Kept me busy but made a good day.

When the shop had too many men the shop super split the crew and I ran half of the work. Did not like playing boss, but the money was good. Yes I was the outside man but for the most part most of my time was in the heated shop. Then the company made a couple big mistakes and went downhill fast.
I went back out in the field but soon retired from the union (at a dam good pension) and as I had a CDL drove large trucks till my wife reached retirement age and we moved up to the lake

So as I said a few posts back I bleed and burned for the boss.

When I was an apprentice I worked for a shop that remodeled grocery stores. Think Cub Foods, HyVee, Supervalue, etc. IMPOSSIBLE to avoid that shit.

You know how you'd drain the refrigerant? Pump the system down, reclaim what you can then take a Sawzall and go berzerker.

Except for business/security job trips, last time I went to Minnesoda I was a kid in early/mid teens.....with family driving from Wash DC to Cleveland Ohio to pickup my cousin/folks....and continue on to the Messabi Iron Range in middle of Minnisoda.......

a very interesting trip, past Chicago around the lake to the right side of the car, heading north, spotting a VERY LONG RR trestle out about 3 miles in middle of the lake......not thinking much about it.....turned left and parallel to the RR track coming downhill from the iron range, we stopped for gas at a station on the left of the highway......the RR track was shaded from open view by a row of trees/bushes/etc......and the ground started shaking, we thought earthquake, the station operator just laughed and said it's s ORE TRAIN.......went by in a huge hurry easy 80+ mph.......short cars, VERY heavy.....

got to the iron mines, largest hole in the ground I ever saw, except the grand canyon.......lookout spot to put a nickle in the scope to see the grand scale ore scoop/digger.....and a dump truck next to it looked like a little toy car by comparison.......

the trains would run out over the lake and dump the ore into barges that went to various steel mills, in all the cities near the Great Lakes.....

overall, a very nice industrial education for a kid......

"Best" one when I was welding a truss for a big church in Philadelphia , it was 14' x 70'

I'm on a ladder welding overhead when I "lost" my puddle. Down my shirt and as I jumped off the 8' ladder I was standing on, I pulled out my pants at the waist as it rolled down my right left ( glad I dress to the left ) and luckily only sat on the top of my boot for a second.

I had a nice burn where it splashed against my neck, "dance" marks down my chest and leg with a minor blister on the inside of my right calf. I was one of the guys that tied my boots. Two trains of thought. Tight to keep out the splatter or loose to be able to kick them off.

Every welder I know can recognize the smell of burning jeans with the slightest of a scent.
