I'm making the assumption that the cell tower and power people are protecting their assets and are not too concerned with the ships or much else. I can't say whether those bumpers are legislated or whether they did it for themselves.

Most likely their decision to protect their assets. It's questionable whether they would stand up to a 90,000 ton ship moving at 9 mph.

Apparently bridge protection wasn't "shovel ready" for The Obama. It takes so much engineering study to place dirt and rocks around a bridge pier. So complex...

I bet that 45-47 years ago when the bridge was built there were more competent ship captains and harbor pilots. So they didn’t need idiot guards.

and way smaller ships, so likely the engineers thought "nah, it'll be fine with the ships that normally come and go thru here."

You can't see what they hit. The island you're looking at is protecting the tower that strings comm and power across the river. You can see the lack of containment on the bridge support in this before pic.

And they weren't being forced to run on reclaimed french fry oil as fuel.

I heard this morning the suggestion that contaminated fuel could be at fault.

We MUST do away with fossil fuels !!!


Without a fossil fuel locomotive force, they could have quickly dropped the main sail and gybe. Gone full left rudder and sent the parrot to warn the workers. Arrrg.

There have also been problems reported with the "environmentally friendly" fuel they are required to burn close to shore.

There's a video out there that shows the ship virtually coasting fairly straight when the lights were out. The two times the lights came back, the ship veered starboard.

My new theory is that they had moved everything to full reverse and had the rudder set in the wrong position. Power snaps back on and all full reverse will do now is turn the bow of the boat. Happened twice. Two distinct bends in the course line.

I hate that ****ing bridge. I have had a paranoid fear of those tall bridges since birth. I drove across that bastard when it happened. In my fear, I go as fast as I can to get off the damn thing. I passed the Trailways bus that went in on the approach to the raised section. I saw the damn Summit Venture and thought "hat looks ****ed up, what a weird place to be" and passed a number of other cars. The fog obscured what was behind me, and I didn't know what happened. I was sitting in a tire shop getting new tires when it came on the TV in the waiting room. A classmate was a diver who worked for the company that recovere the bodies, cars and other vehicles that went off the end. I recognized most of them as ones I had passed.

Wonder of this bridge accident will genrate as many golf club sales as the Tamp one did?
