Default Vintage tool find

this came today, $5 + shipping (total of $9.30).

an old Craftsman 0-1 Micrometer, that according to my brief research was made by Scherr-Tumico, a respected name in such devices, and made in USA (not China).

now i just need to figure out what all the little parts do. zeros fine!

nice little addition to the shop.

Very nice

Yours has a ratchet stop on the end of the thimble. That can be used for consistent spindle pressure for accurate measurements.

To clean between the anvil and spindle, a plain piece of paper works just fine. Place the paper there and gently (lightly) pinch the paper and then slide it out. Check zero.

I have an easy way to explain it.

One inch equals $10.00

each .100 ( hundred thousandths) is $1.

Each full revolution is .25 cents

Just "add up the change" and the dollars for the measurement

My outside mics are possibly the only thing I own which are fully digital. At least they are truly mechanical; no batteries required!

Nice, I picked up 2 Starretts about that size from the 60s or earlier couple weeks ago with 80s calibration certs.
Old guy been selling them off every summer. Last summer it was dial gauges and bases, etc.

found a little box for it to rest in, so it doesn't get dusty in the shop.

checked it against some spacer blocks i have (1/8, 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2, as well as a 1-2-3 block), and it's right on.

the display might be off by 1/2 a thou, but that will work for what i'm doing. not sure how to re-zero it, if i need a tool, i don't have it.

My Dad had one of them in his toolbox, gave it to my son......with the box full of other tools.....

I sure recognize the name Starrett for some reason, but unsure if from Dad's old mic. or some other one, I have a little one in my tool box, been setting there for decades, but not much settings/handles/ and the name is American ok.but nothing I recognize....
