My very good friend of 36 years is currently dealing with the mental decline of her 85-year-old mother. Her mom has had a couple of falls, and the last one was bad enough that my friend had to move back into her mother's house to take care of her. Her mother is forgetful, extremely stubborn, and also verbally abusive. Her mother has even bitten her a couple of times - that's how crazy she has become.

As maddening as it is, there is absolutely nothing to be gained by responding in kind; when a mentally ill person is abusive to you, you just have to let it go like water off a duck's back. If you let it get to you it's your own sanity that suffers, not theirs.
