My 19th Visit To The Memorial
That's the Flight 93 crash site memorial near Shanksville , PA.
It's like an annual pilgrimage for me and several others. I first started going in 2002 when they allowed visitors, which there was nothing there but old stripmining fields and a dirt/rocky road. First 8 years went with various bike clubs, the latter 11 years with Corvette clubs. Only missed one year, 2020 with the covid situation. We make a 2 day round trip of about 600 miles. From DE, take the highways to Hancock, MD, then the scenic back roads to Grantsville, MD where we stay overnight. Sunday, take the backroads from there to the site, great ride. The site is finished, visitors center, memorial center, crash site, and the 40 bells structure. Very emotional moving place. Will be going again in 2022. Some folks had asked where are the remaining aircraft parts from the crash. They are at the memorial grounds. The Army had stored the parts in a container and are buried at an undisclosed location. Only the family members of the victims are allowed to proceed to the boulder memorial at the point of impact. Some of yesterday's pics.

I went there back in 2002 as part of the Stars and Stripes cruise to NYC. I only did from Columbus to Shanksville but it was a memorable trip for me.

I hope that "tourists" treat the memorial with more respect than the "tourists" who go to the wtc memorial in NYC. They treat it like Disneyland, it's infuriating.
I still can't bring myself to go to it, and if I have to go downtown, I avoid the area. Thanks for posting Norm, I hadn't seen the PA memorial before. |

If you go, you may want to avoid the weekends, it seems to be the most crowded. Next year we will go on weekdays.
