My day at the range with a State House Representative
He showed up on time, we chatted briefly (already had the truck loaded), gave him a 4x6 card with gun safety rules. Got it. Good.
and off we went, about a 50 min drive up to the range. we had a good chat on the drive up, talked more at the range between shooting guns, and chatted more on the way home and once we got back to our house. we shot pistols (Sig P320 9mm, Beretta 92 9mm, Beretta Px4 9mm [my daily carry], SW40VE [a close copy of a Glock 22] 40 SW, and a 1914 vintage 1911 45 ACP). he hit his target, a lot! decided he didn't like the 40 SW pistol (it's small, and the 40 has a bigger kick), but the others were ok. the point was to show the differences that different pistol types, weights, sizes, and calibers make to shooting a gun fast (which his bill mentions). Then up to the rifle range where we shot my SW MP15 rifle (AR-15 version by SW), then my grandfather's 30-06 bolt action rifle, and then my Browning BAR 30-06 semi-auto rifle. wanted to show him how powerful the .223 round was compared to the 30-06. not even close. about 1/2 the muzzle energy. we talked a lot about bump stocks (the intent of his bill) and what could be done about them. noted that ATF is presently asking for comments to a proposed rule making procedure that could restrict them to the same level as machine guns and silencers - forms and a tax stamp. talked about what the state could do if ATF does nothing. from full ban to various restrictions to nothing. full bans just make people mad. choose another route. talked about gun free zones and how they get shot up a lot. talked about recent and no so recent mass shootings and lessons learned. talked about concealed carry permit holders and their relative lawfulness and trustworthiness. with the upcoming legislative session set to be only for budget items, it is unlikely that his bill would be allowed to be offered, so now he has a year to refine it with knowledge gained today and this next year. what i object to is law makers making laws about things they know nothing about. now he knows more than when he woke up this morning. that's good. i of course got stuck cleaning all the guns. they weren't too bad, not a lot of rounds from any one gun. so stay tuned, he says he's working on a revised version. woot. |

You could do the same thing in California but the congressperson would send a delegation of a homeless person, a transexual, and an illegal immigrant in their place, and they'd bill you for their time.

There's no point in talking to any of my representatives if I don't bring 20K in cash with me. Anyway, the only time my Congressman comes to my county is if he is receiving an award or something is being named after him.

If you just stomp your feet and bleat “no more gun laws”, then you aren’t at the table to hear the other side. Gave him several ideas on how the state could address this, knowing the mistakes that Nevada made with their recent private sale law. They can’t make the FBI do backgrounds on private sales. But you know who has a concealed carry permit. And you can tax things. Lots of options besides outright bans. |

just saw scores for today's match posted. 23 shooters, came in 11th. mid pack today. on two stages, i elected to take head shots (4" circle) instead of body shots (8" circle), just to test myself today, knowing i wasn't going to win against the group there. so that took extra time to get all those. i'm pleased. try again next week.
really liking my 147 grain bullets (9mm). very soft shooting. |

Federal American Eagle factory load. 147 grain, 1000 ft/sec advertised muzzle velocity, 326 ft-lb energy. power factor should be 145 easy (weight x velocity), as it is measured about 10 down range, and i'm shooting a 4.7" barrel. minimum power factor is 125. woot.

as i told him, no one told me to do this, no one is paying me any money to do this. not the NRA (although I am a Life Benefactor Member), not the Brady Center, not idiot Bloomberg. my gas, my ammo, my guns, my comments. he really seemed to like the pile of stuff i had searched for and printed out. what really got me is the way the maker of the bump stock (Slide Fire) told 2 different stories. one to the ATF, about how it helps handicapped people shoot a rifle better, and the one they told to the patent office and the shopping public about how it helps shoot a rifle faster. don't lie. pick your story and stick with it. |

So, lite beer can't taste great AND be less filling? Can you prove the bump stock does NOT help handicapped people shoot a rifle? Personally, I'm more upset that a company has to go groveling, hat in hand to the ATF to be permitted to sell their product in the first place. |

I'm upset that the mission of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms isn't to ensure that law-abiding citizens have unfettered access to all three.
