So my son took a new job
He had a job offer on the table, and he wound up taking it. Caretaker/landscape lead at a resort on Orcas island. It pays OK (and no income tax in Washington), and they provide living quarters. On one hand- if you're a young, single guy and enjoy the big city club scene and all... this wouldn't be your dream gig. On the other hand, if the idea of living/working in a relatively isolated spot with breath-taking views, 24/7, this might just be the ticket.
Now about that "out of the way" part. Anacortes or Sidney B.C. are the two closest ports by ferry. Anacortes is on the mainland, about 80 mi. north of Seattle. Be interesting to see how he likes it. *When the kids were growing up, we spent A LOT of time on the San Juans, and the Canadian Gulf Islands immediately north. So he's no stranger to the area and what it offers. One interesting thing about the San Juans is they are located in the "Rain Shadow" of the Olympic Mountains, so they get a fraction of the rain Seattle does. So today, he saddled up the Vulcan and headed north. Taken from the ferry about 4:30 this afternoon. This is what he rode up there. Decent weather today, but was pouring buckets all weekend. Ironically, that bike will make more sense where he is now than it did down here. I hope he finds everything he's looking for up there. |

We go to Orcas every couple of months. Beautiful, as the Puget Sound is, and
the ferry ride is nice too. Aside from all the libtards, a great place to live and work as a young person! |

My wife's uncle lived on Orcas Island for decades. He loved the scenery but finally got tired of the ferry, and now lives in Bend. Good luck to your son.

Oddly, daughter has a similar "office." Main difference being, with a couple of Engineering Degrees and a .Gov job, she makes just a tad more. Interesting how both kids wound up in jobs that keep them outdoors most of the time. That would have been my choice too, come to think of it... if I had thought of it back then.

PB - great looking job in my eyes. It seems to me that kids today are looking at the experience over the dollar sign. Richer lives, man, richer lives. I understand the pull. |
