Turns out the folks caught up in this tornado could have easily thought they were well away from what turned out to be a record setting monster...

El Reno tornado, at 2.6 miles across, was widest on record - U.S. News

I read somewhere that it went from an F1 to and F5 in 22 seconds.

I saw a map of the tornado with all known storm chaser positions. It's interesting. Most tornadoes move NE, this one when it formed went SE. The SE sector is where most storm chasers want to be for best viewing so this thing came right for them. They should have fled East or South to escape it. I don't think they all did as a few storm chasers positions appear on that map as being to the North of the storm. Eventually it did cut back to the NE assuming a typical track and this may have caught some of the chasers offguard who had managed to avoid the fiasco to the SE.

I've run into some pretty hairy weather conditions while endurance riding on the motorcyle. Stopping isn't much of an option but I'm no storm chaser, more of a storm dodger when possible. Was zig-zagging across western Minnesota one day and ended up riding under a horizontal rope tornado. Cross winds were hitting me like a sledge hammer. Craziest damn thing I ever did on a bike but the thing was just so awesome looking I couldn't pass it up

That u-tube video shows a hell of a lot more storm chasers than the one I was talking about. Overall they did a good job of staying out of the way. It's a wonder more of them weren't killed.

At what point do you stop recording and go to see if you can render aid to those who were in the path?

I understand the need to capture the footage for scientific study, but at what point do you become human again and help those who couldn't get out of the path?
