1960 Chevy Corvair dash baby cradle: Who knew?
In the words of boxing promoter Don King, "Only in America".
The Corvair manual called it a package shelf. |

We used to ride in the rear (package) tray all of the time when we were small. If we were both asleep, one on the rear seat, and one on the rear floor. Dad had a Corvair for awhile, but it was yet another vehicle mom "convinced" him to get rid of. Corvair, Bel Air station wagon - Turquoise over white, 1950 Ford Truck were all among mom's victims. |

I used to ride and sleep in the 'back well' of my dad's '63 VW Bug. I still remember the smell and itch of that German wool carpeting. And the vibration of the whole car as he lugged it up steep hills in San Francisco in too high a gear. I had a plastic dashboard and steering wheel that hung by two hooks off the top of the front seat....I could stand up on the back seat and pretend to drive the car. While my parents chain-smoked and whizzed down the road, not a seatbelt in sight. I remember being 4 years old and having a friend of the family give me a ride home from a construction site my parents were doing a project at, and she put a seatbelt on me and cinched it tight. I don't think I'd ever even SEEN one before. The car, looking back through time, was a brand new '65 Plymouth Belvedere. Felt totally different than our VW Bug or our '59 Peugeot 403. Who knew cars had more than 4 cylinders???

I had a '67 Charger back in high school (late seventies). My four year old brother used to ride behind the rear seats. Like a big hatch area but didn't open.

Our next door neighbor had a red '65 ragtop with the 4 speed and turbo. I remember getting rides in it and it was totally cool. I think that's when I became aware of how cool 4 speeds were instead of automatics, and I was just a kid.
