Gameroom Barn Bucks: $510
Default 1977 overheating

I was driving down a highway- flooring the car when it began overheating. I was able to get it home but now if it runs for 5 mins, it overheats. I'm thinking it is the thermostat but looking for validation or other opinions?

Much appreciated!

I had an overheating issue with my 76 due to bumper to bumper traffic in 90 degree heat. My buddy checked my thermostat and it was fine. I suggest taking a new route if not already done and upgrade to dual electric fans. I did the Flex-a-lite dual 12" fans and the kit come complete with everything you need. Mine kicks in at 160 about 40% and at 190 it kicks in 100%. System is completely adjustable to your own specification. The same kit will fit yours being it is a universal kit. Check out Ecklerscorvette.com part#28631. I also suggest upgrading to an aluminum radiator if not already done.

Thanks. Looks like my radiator was shot. New radiator installed. Price for that was $1200 with tune up, oil change for a non-aluminum 3 row radiator. Was that a high price?

I guess it would depend on what the tune up consisted of. I would have highly recommended an aluminum radiator and Im surprised the mechanic didnt recommend one as well. You can get one from 297-535 depending on the brand and how many rows the radiator is. If you have not considered electric fans then look into it. You lose horsepower with the manual fan. Hope all of this was helpful.
