Mattis is butthurt that Trump wouldn't start any new wars, and is pissed that Trump is trying to exit Afghanistan. You don't get to rise in the military without some wars happening.

Edit: So you really have to examine people's motivations for what they do. The generals were super happy to be on the Trump team when they thought they could just lead him along like they did with Bush and Obama. They thought Trump's America first, stop being the world's policeman message was just rhetoric. Once they found out he was serious, and wouldn't change his mind and start wars, and instead, actually sought peace, lots of people he hired bailed on him, including Mattis and war hawk John Bolton.

That doesn't mean Mattis is a bad guy, it's just that peace and no wars isn't good for the general business.
