Maybe he was eating the bugs in the wood?

Bondo or wood filler would fix the spot. If you aren't in the mood for construction at this time.

Pileated woodpeckers seek out diseased trees and rotting wood as they harbor insects for them to eat.

They won't peck a crevice or hole in a perfectly healthy tree.

The peckerwoods didn’t like the music. Or they ate all the bees and their larva.
I haven’t seen them today.

Thank you for that info. We may fill in the smaller places for now. We have been discussing how some of the railing/bannisters were looking bad and needed replaced.

If there are kids in the household I would recommend immediate replacement. If the entire railing is as soft as the "pecked" area a child who tripped on a shoelace would likely break straight through...

I agree. Toddler grandbaby is here often but not on the front porch where the damage is. John is going to go ahead and replace the badly damaged section.
We recently discussed replacing the bannisters with some type of wrought iron or metal but I’m not sure how it would look with the cedar.

This time of year, my pecker rises to the challenge every morning right at dawn. You can set your clock to it!

Nah, not me. It makes me get out of bed every ****ing morning, open the window, and stick my head out, then he flies away. About every 2-3 years, I have to get way up on a ladder and fill the little holes the one or two pecks he gets in before I catch him leave for me. The little bastard!

The wrecking crew has not returned. I turned the radio off and hung suet in a tree. Killed some ants that I found on the porch. They are beautiful to see even if they did peck my porch.
