10mm vs. ???????
Looking to buy a new handgun in the not too distant future. I have had my eye on the 10mm for a while. Anyone have any experience with this caliber? Pros, cons?

I've heard good this about the round supposed to be a hot round. I;ve stuck to .40 and 9m for light days a .44 for heavy. I'll be watching this topic...

I would avoid it due to ammo supply issues in our modern world. I'd stick with .45 ACP or 9mm.

@Hardluck would actually be able to provide some great input on this one.
Personally, I would avoid the 10mm since I rarely see it available. The weapon is useless without rounds. |

Regardless of what you may hear, modern 9mm ammo is an effective fight stopper in almost any situation, a ubiquitous round, very controllable, highly available and with many options for a weapons platform. And yeah 10mm might be hard to find if we have another major ammo shortage..

Another thing people overlook is putting shots on target. If the ammo is cheaper and more available, you tend to train more often and become more proficient. With a smaller gun as the 9mm's are available in, you will also tend to carry it more. A big 10mm cannon isn't going to save your ASP if it's sitting in a safe at home.

Two calibers I would not touch now unless someone out right gave me the gun (and hopefully a bunch of ammo) would be the 10mm or the .45 Glock. |

Hard hitting but has recoil to match. As said above it is expensive to buy and sometimes hard to find. Weapons in this caliber are generally full duty sized pieces if carry is a concern. I cannot recommend it for smaller or frailer folk because it can be punishing to shoot, and fullsize weapons tend to be heavy. Stout recoil springs make slide manipulation a chore as well. If you happen to reload, it can be tamed for practice if you can find components.
All that said, it is an interesting, powerful and viable cartridge... I do not choose to own one however. |

LOL....a friend has an 1881 Manlicher military rifle with a straight bolt and an additional factory sight on the side of the barrel for use in shooting men off of horses (establishes automatic lead). It is chambered for 11 mm Egyptian. No problem there, since his dad bought 3,000 rounds in stripper clips in 1969 for $10. These are black powder, bottle necked cartridges with paper patched 250 -300 grain bullets. We took this thing out to the desert and shot 100 rounds with it at 240 yards. All of the ammo was dated 1886---so it was 130+ years old at the time. Out of 100 rounds, we had one split case/misfire. It was accurate, awesome to shoot, and an oddball. Looked on line and those rounds go for more than $20 apiece and in 5 shot stripper clips, forget it.
We were burning it up like it was .22 LR!!! (he still has about 2500 rounds left, though.) |

Lars, the guy's dad was a 'hoarder' and so is his son, my friend. The old ammo is in dovetailed wooden crates with rope handles and is packed in excelsior soaked in beeswax. Cool old stuff. He had an original complete Double W Winchester bullet board that had every cartridge intact from 1897 and got close to 20k for it at auction in 2012. I wanted to buy it as a huge wall hanger but couldn't justify the cost. Very cool old stuff. |

FBI originally adopted the 10mm after the Miami Shootout, but only carried it for a couple of years, 30 years ago. They found that it was too difficult to control for many shooters. The .40 S&W was the offshoot of the 10mm, and it was wildly popular until most recently 9mm made a resurgence.
10mm died after the FBI dropped it, but it had a few followers, and remained nearly extinct for a couple of decades until Glock decided to come out with the 10mm Glock 20 and Glock 29. The round made a rebound and has a following with outdoorsman and is popular in Alaska. I have two 10mm handguns, an original Colt Delta Elite and a Glock 20. I usually carry 220 hardcasts or 190 grain mono-metal rounds for outdoor carry. Before anyone says it, a 12 gauge Brenneke slug would be a lot better for Brown Bears, but sometimes you have what you have, and it might only be a handgun. It’s my go to handgun for backwoods carry while hiking and fishing. I worry less about Brown bears than two legged creatures, but I have enough confidence in my Glock 20 that I don’t feel undergunned. I wouldn’t buy a 10mm just to buy one. It’s a niche round and it’s expensive and hard to source. Unless you have a use for it, it’s just going to sit and gather dust in your gun safe. |

I almost bought an S&W .41 Magnum back in the day. Glad I got a .357 instead.

I always practice defensive shooting... by shooting 2 round bursts. The 10mm was difficult to get that second shot centered; a lot of recoil (even with the full framed Glock 20).
I now have 9mm and .380 as my defensive calibers; and a Taurus Judge as my fun gun |
