Default Why no CB section?

They were a factory option back in the day.

In that era... I repaired those for GM; worked at a contracted warranty repair location.

Back a ways I had a 81 Vette (had the sort of rare 4SPD trans) with that abomination of a CB radio/commercial radio. Thing was the worst CB I ever owned,Dealer and private shop I took it to were worthless!.

I had about 10 CBs over a period from about 1972 till 85 when I bought that Vette used. My Johnson 3 -23a was great, some asshole took it right out of my truck in my driveway and I lived in what was considered a good neighborhood.

Does it still work? And are there still people to talk to on it?

The factory CB combo car radios were 2 piece; the CB was a seperate chassis... controlled by the car radio front panel.

Actually, the CB was good; but the poor performance had to do with the antenna GM used. Most were the motorized (automatic) antennas. They were AM/FM antennas that were pranged into working at CB freqs... but not very well.

The best "mod" one could do with one of these units was to use a seperate antenna for CB. I remember a lot of cars coming into the shop back then... where we did this (add seperate CB antenna).

Mine was!

They put on 2 different antennas (both motorized) but it did not help much. At that time I did not know that a standalone antenna might have helped out. Compared to the radios I had in the past, the one in my Vette was just useless.

That Johnson 3 23A was the best I had followed up by a Bowman <SP> side band that was well worked over by a long time Ham operator that built his own equipment.

Speaking/typing about antennas on vettes, my '72 had the antenna laid down across the back, under the plastic, just a few inches in front of the fuel tank, instead of it's OEM mount on the fender/body.....guess what?? it worked fine...never an issue....but all that crap was torn out long ago, no tunes in my car.....custom gauges....

Now a daze it's all cphones......but I received one of the very first cphone calls ever made.....

a buddy from HS daze was heavy into ham radio, and a fellow TV shop head tech/foreman/manager like I was, but for another shop.....

we shared the gun hobby, but he went for ham radio, I went for stereo/sound gear.....

he got hold of old MOTRAC cab/cop radio transceiver from the trunk of the old sedans back when, and modified it to 2 meter ham radio freq band....
In Tyson's corner Va. was a nice tall hillside on some then farm land and the then new Ch 20 UHF station built a YEUGGGGE tower that radiated for many a city around DC......and so the ham radio guys rented some space on the tower.....and put in a few antennas.....and repeaters, tied to phone lines.....

so my buddy put a 2100 push button desk set in his Mustang, and hooked it to the Motrac ......and so called me from his car doing some 60+ mph on the DC beltway.....back when you could DO 60 on the road.....

technically that was not a cell call; instead a 2-way radio "autopatch" call. But still...

TRUE, but I would have needed a similar setup in my car....or at least a back pack....but carrying around an old desk set would be a chore.....

"Star" to bring it up, "pound" to drop it. It was cool to impress friends making
autopatch calls with a an FT-470 HT.
