My new private island . . .

I bought an 18" base cabinet and turned it into an island, to go along with my new stove. My old WWII-era stove, no pilots, no oven light, reached the end of its days.

The old stove was a 20", I bought a 24" so I had to chop 4" off the existing shelves:




New cabinet, all chipboard except for the finished oak front:






I put Lauan plywood on the three sides. I wanted to use a maple or oak veneer, but I didn't want to drive 18 miles to Lowe's to get it.



And here's the kicker: A lot of people have private islands, but how many people have a portable private island?

I put casters under it so I can move it next to the stove when cooking, or push it away when I want.

I tried peeling it off when I assembled the stove and it was too hard. Besides, it's women's work.

FWIW: This GE stove is a cheap piece of Mexican shit, sheet metal is very thin among other things. When "the guy" was here hooking up the propane I asked him about it, and he said other brands were no better.

But it's way better than my WWII stove. For a couple of weeks after having the new one I kept reaching for the cigarette lighter to light the burners, then realized I don't need it anymore.

And having an oven light is "movin' on up!"
