Not sure about that. A golf ball is a pretty small target.

Congrats. I've never made it off a putt putt course, but had people around me that were pretty darn good and could have given me free lessons. I sometimes regret not taking it up.

It's not about the score. It's for the love of the game. I won't surrender even though my back won't allow me to play without ending up on a chiropractor's table.

Q: A friend just broke 100 for the first time. I read that this is something only 20 percent of all golfers ever do. Any truth to that? --Becky Krakowski, Dayton, Ohio

A: Not true. At least half of all golfers in America have broken 100. On average, 5 percent shoot in the 70s, 20 percent in the 80s and 27 percent in the 90s. The average score in America in 2005 was 98.3. So breaking 100 is, well, pretty average. It's a significant milestone (especially if you do it under U.S. Open conditions--see the Golf Digest U.S. Open Challenge). But there are more important ambitions in golf beyond scoring goals. Here are the things The Golf Guru recommends every golfer do at least once, if not this year, then in a lifetime: Go on an all-golf, 36-a-day, no-spouse buddies trip. Get an autograph of a player you admire. Go to Pebble Beach. Play cross-country golf with friends on your home course on a deserted winter's day--the winner of each "hole" gets to nominate the next one. Play in a pro-am. Late on a still summer's evening, play a round on your own, taking your time and concentrating fully on every shot. Get your name on the wall of a clubhouse somewhere. Play a hole one-handed. Go to St. Andrews. Acquire a golf painting. And a really old golf book. Play 18 holes in atrocious weather, refusing to walk in despite the downpour. Hit a ball off the edge of a cliff or a ship directly into the sea. Take some lessons with a good pro. Hit the green on the 17th at TPC Sawgrass. Watch Tiger hit a shot, in the flesh. Win a trophy. Make a hole-in-one. Shake Arnie's hand.
You are now officially better than 50% of all golfers.

When you make your next trip to Florida give me a heads up and let's try and play a round or two.

Really wish these guys appreciated auto racing.
My regular golf partners are from all different areas. One is a retired Marine, Another is s portfolio manager, Four are Retired FDNY, Another is retired NYPD, Several others are/were executive or Production in the high tech industry. One is a multi millionaire and another is just shy of being a billionaire. The last two are REALLY into cars and I've been to several F1's with them.

Golf is about you being as good as you can be within the rules and ethics of the game. It's not the quality of your golf game but the quality of your character that makes you an enjoyable partner.

Very true. The reality is that within 3-5 holes you will know if the person you are with will cheat you in business or be fair. If they cheat or try to ignore the rules or don't follow the etiquette of the game you can be assured they will do the same in business.

My regret is only taking the game up when I was just shy of 40.

I am a terrible golfer and will have to admit. I have been practicing at the range a bit and trying to get my swing right. I have a problem with lifting my head and opening up the face when I do it. I really don't know how to break that and have started to develop a swing where I close the face more on the downswing so that I open flat on the up.

I need to go and get lessons again so that I can have someone help me fix this issue.

Any suggestions?

I know. And we have a new place here about to open called pro golf or something like that? It is a driving range that is open air and 4 stories tall. They are supposed to have some pros there and I might have to get back on some lessons so I can get my game back.

I grew up on a golf course and played 5 days a week when I was young and then quit when we moved away. I just started back in the last year and swinging clubs more in the past few months and want to get my game back.

Congrats Val That is a good milestone and now that you broke that hurdle, now try to stay in that range.

My late Grandfather loved to play golf and I would play with him once a week.

We've shot golf balls at the gun club. A .22LR seems to give the most distance as the larger center fire pistols just make a hole in the ball.
