Default Painting engine parts

For a while now I've been wanting to have some parts on my engine powder coated but lately I don't want the down time that goes along with it so I'm thinking about just painting them. Does anyone have a good argument for not painting my parts? Oh yeah, wanting to paint my alternator and bracket, throttle body and maybe the MAF.

I wouldn't mess with the MAF. Too sensitive a part, and all it takes is one little speck of gunk to throw your baby in a tizzy.
Kinda like when you breathe wrong and the wife goes off!
The other parts, I say go for it!

My objections to self painting: engine heat, oil & grease on the parts and the fact they are made of plastic or metals that do not take to paint sticking very well. It's your car so I say "go for it" but I have to wonder just how long a self paint job will last and what it will look like long term. JMO

powder coated = Longevity against the elements

DIY painted engine parts = Will not stand up to the environment as well

It is your ride you decide.

That's why I ask you guys stuff like this, to keep my cheap Dutch heritage in check. If I paint the parts I can always touch them up but if I have them coated I'll probably never have to worry about them unless I throw a wrench at the engine.

You Got it, you could always repaint/touch up but again it's your ride and you decide.

I beg to differ.
If he paints the bracket and alternator with either caliper paint, or high temp engine paint, and preps them well, I see no reason it won't stand up.
I painted my intake 3 years ago, and it looks just as good as the day I did it.
It's all about the prep.

Sneaks your 100% correct. I should have explained my response in more detail. No offense Munch, but he has stated he is lazy not in a bad way just that he does not like to take a lot of extra time to work on certain things if he does not have to. He likes a faster way that takes less of his time to accomplish a great result. So with that in mind I did not think he would take the time in effort to prep / paint himself in order to get the results for longevity on painted engine parts. Now for the average or above average DIY guy / gal that has the patients and time with the correct prep work and high temp paint you can have a excellent result, but again I was directing my info more at Munch. Not saying he can not do it just saying I do not think he would want to invest the time required. Maybe I'm wrong and I should not have assumed. My apologies to Munch if I misinterpreted.

No offense taken. In the end I will probably paint them myself as the powder coater I was going to use is not local and can't show me any color / texture samples and I'm kind of picky about that stuff. I do claim to be lazy but I enjoy doing that kind of stuff and did auto body and painting in my past life.

Getting back on track.....
Munch, if you want a really good job, wash the parts down with a good degreaser, then wipe them off with paint thinner, then wash them down with Dawn. If you know someone with a sandblasting, or bead blasting, cabinet even better.

Sure, sure. I'll degrease them and then have to sand all the casting marks off and what not. Then clean them some more before paint. I'm sure Gary will let me use the booth at the barn so they should turn out pretty good. thanks for the suggestions.

Paint works fine if you prep it correctly. I self paintd my valve covers and throttle-body on my old Z06 and it stood up to trackday use for years. It still looks perfect and never chipped or flaked at all. I used that wrinkle/textured black spray stuff by Krylon. From what I remember I used the following procedure:

1. Wash parts with dawn or similar
2. Put on nitrile gloves (oils from your skin can cause paint adhesion issues)
3. Wipe w/ acetone or similar
4. Lightly scuff sand parts
5. Re-wipe w/ acetone
6. Primer with high temp primer, use etching primer for metallic parts
7. Paint
8. Bake in the oven where applicable
