I have what's probably a stupid question but here goes.

That picture was probably taken by the guy sitting across from you with what I'd guess is a phone.

So why do we never really see any phone shots -video or stills- of the shitholes from the guys on the ground? No ragheads blown to bits, bombed buildings, dead camels, etc.

Are you not allowed to carry your phones when deployed? Your photo would suggest otherwise.

That was taken with a camera. As to your other question, there are some pics, but most of the time there was no time to take pics. Even then, it was highly "discouraged" to take pics. Well, at least in my unit it was, but a lot of times, pics could give away key intel if they were shared out to family and friends back home and there was the possibility it would end up on social media, found, and used for nefarious reasons.

So, taking pics was frowned upon in most instances.

I'll echo that. I was out before pictures on phones was a common thing, but generally speaking, "personal" pictures were absolutely not allowed except in specific areas/events. There have been a few instances, especially when the original social media boom happened, that people were posting real-time information of things that absolutely should not have been posted.

I remember very vividly some dumb sh*t on my ship posting pictures on their Myspace page of Tomahawk missiles being launched ... before they hit their targets.

From that point on, outgoing data was very restricted when it needed to be. I can only assume that's still the case.

Oh, and happy Birthday to the bug eaters.

Already been to a couple rather "interesting" places!

Happy Birthday, Army.

We (2nd Battalion, 4th Marines) were assigned to the Big Red 1 Brigade while deployed in Ramadi, Iraq in 2004. Colonel Connor was the Commanding Officer. They were great to us.

Twenty-Two US Troops Injured in Syria ‘Helicopter Mishap’
CENTCOM shared little detail about the incident

by Dave DeCamp Posted on June 13, 2023Categories NewsTags Syria

US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced in a press release Monday night that 22 US troops were injured in a “helicopter mishap” in northeastern Syria.

The command said the incident happened on Sunday and resulted in injuries of “various degrees.” The press release said that 10 service members were “evacuated to higher care facilities.”

CENTCOM shared little detail about the mishap, saying the cause is “still under investigation” and that no “enemy fire was reported.” It’s not clear where in northeast Syria the incident took place.

A US airdrop operation involving helicopters was reported on the same day in al-Hasakah, a province in northeast Syria. According to Syrian state media, the operation was carried out with the Kurdish-led SDF, and one civilian was killed by US forces.

The pro-opposition UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also reported the helicopter raid but claimed a person “affiliated” with ISIS was killed in the joint US-SDF operation. Neither account has been confirmed, and CENTCOM has not mentioned the operation.

The US has about 900 troops in eastern Syria and backs the SDF in the region, allowing Washington to control about one-third of the country’s territory. The US claims the occupation is about fighting ISIS, but it is part of the economic campaign against Damascus, which involves crippling economic sanctions and the control of oil fields in occupied areas.
I thought Trump pulled us out of Syria. The only bright spot here seems to be that no one died, which is unusual for a helo crash. Hopefully all those guys make it with no permanent disablement.

A friend of mine from college had a friend who lost her husband in an Army helo crash. I guess she got a settlement from Bell Helicopter, maybe from the Army, too. Cutie, and drove a brand new Nissan 300Z. We road tripped from Houston to go visit our mutual friend one weekend.
