A long time I did a job inside a plant that made phosgene gas. The issued detector badges to everyone at the gate, but did NOT insist on respirators for us since we weren't going to be working immediately IN the phosgene unit So they go through the spiel, look and see if the badge has changed colors.

So here's the thing. Say I look down and my badge sensor has changed color. What am I supposed to do? I have just enough time to maybe say a short prayer before I literally puke my guts out and die a horrible death. I mean, I'd rather not know until I actually start dying. What's a few seconds or minutes of the fear and terror of knowing what is coming gonna do for me? I'll still be dead.

I just did the same job the day after Christmas, what a royal PITA. In my case getting the old one out was the hardest part as the mounting studs were completely corroded, eventually they snapped off and out it came

I had a nice burn where it splashed against my neck, "dance" marks down my chest and leg with a minor blister on the inside of my right calf. I was one of the guys that tied my boots. Two trains of thought. Tight to keep out the splatter or loose to be able to kick them off.

Every welder I know can recognize the smell of burning jeans with the slightest of a scent.
A common thing in the trade is having someone walk by and calmly say "your on fire'', you reply thank you and calmly take care of it. Its not your first time and it wont be the last.

I also tied my high top boots and always had my pants leg go over the boot, never bloused. Also never had a cuff, had them cut off and sewed shut, no place to let the klinkers find a home! Not looking to win a beautiful welder prize!

Most of the Steamfitters here are wearing slip-ons. Red Wing Pecos for the most part.

The Moen had studs underneath but a long ratchet with a 6 point socket made short work of them.

I was an Ironworker from '79 to '83, slip on boots weren't real popular back then. I do see the advantage

Beats me. I just know around here in the early 80’s it was slip ons for the Fitters.

No, wasn't that deep luckily. It's healing up fine.

I do not have high insteps, I have super high insteps. Trying to get a pair of sip on boots or even decent loafer type shoes is a major problem. I could get the rubber boots (chemical gear),to fit over my work boots but they had to be rather big and flexible to go on. Even slip on boots with side zippers did not work.

Not that big of a deal I bought good quality high top work boots and all my after work shoes were lace em up types. I still have 2 pair of my high top lace up work boots in the basement. Use them depending on what project I might be doing
