I think I’m a car guy, though I don’t do any internal engine of transmission work. I definitely do all my own maintenance and bolt on work. I just finished a car related project, I always wanted a Tin Man to go in our woods out back so I just finished putting one together from some old exhaust systems. Yes, it’s purposely a rough, these projects don’t warrant a lot of time making them perfect. Once the weather warms up, he’ll get a coat of paint and be placed in the woods.

I became a car guy out of necessity. My parents paid for my college, but had ZERO additional funds to help me get started in life. I got a job at the local Hess station while still in school, and made the money to buy a '69 Bug, this was 1986.
A year later, when the inevitable happened, (the exhaust valve on #3 burned) my Uncle gave me a bug engine he had, and I did my first engine swap. The rest, as they say, is history. |

Not much putzing around with the new Harley's. On the new motor, you even have to take the gas tank off to remove the second spark plug, which is dead center in the head. Everything through a twin cam, you could basically maintain yourself. Those days are gone....

Yes, I consider myself a car guy and it was originally out of necessity because I was broke! I figured I couldn't do any worse than anyone else on a repair and if I had to buy a tool to accomplish the task then I had the tool for the next time. Now I do it because I enjoy it plus trying to teach my teenager how to do things himself.

I still do , but only maintenance stuff now (oil changes, tire rotations).
Cars and motorcycle. Don't do any major work anymore. Last big project was 5 years ago when I replaced the transmission solenoid pack on the wife's mini-van. Except for my C4 and '94 HD, the daily drivers are still under warranty so that I don't have to do any heavy stuff. Age and health(covid in 2020 has made me a long-hauler) are keeping the "under warranty" in effect. Time to buy the wife a new car before April 2021. |
