What academic advice would you give a college freshman pursuing a lucrative career?

1) Don't go to a liberal arts University or College.

2) Get a Degree in the STEM (or STEAM) fields that's useful

3) If you take the loan, YOU pay it back....not the tax payers.

4) Treat your college time as if it were a job that you can't afford to lose if you take 1-3 above serious (but don't forget to relax when you get the chance)

5) Don't trust your teachers just because they are spewing forth fancy word salads at the front of the classroom. Most likely they are no more intelligent than the drunken idiot frat boy sitting next to you.

Advanced math doods do well with hedge funds that use quants.
Know a few of them, all can retire comfortably by age 40, the lion's share of their wealth is from monies they and employer put into the fund.

My son graduated with a degree in Political FullOSoapy.......and paycheck was minimal...SO he met this gal that the survaying boss was father of, married, kid, big house, divorce, and so my son took the test, passed, master surveyor and got a .gov job paying enough to get his own house in same town.....

I believe I read that only 50% of college students graduate. And a very small percentage of graduates end up working in the field that they are degreed in.

A few years ago my 40 year old niece told me that many of her college graduates (some with masters degrees) were going to trade schools because they could not find well paying jobs.

There will ALWAYS be jobs for people in service type professions such as plumbing, HVAC etc. start your own business and keep it small not a lot of employees if any as often you end up making less net income wit a lot more headaches.

I was pretty straight with mine. No fraternities or you pay for it yourself and that's the way it went. Average GPA the first semesters for most kids is around 2.5. He maintained 3.8 and above through all 4 years plus his masters and still had plenty of time to screw around.

Being expert in political philosophy does zero good when you have a blown up transmission, need to replace a fuse in the house during a storm, or need to clear a deadfall in your yard. I see pretty much ZERO value on any college degree unless it's technical these days. Medical, engineering, math, etc.
Philosophy? Utterly, totally, hopelessly useless. I'd have more use for water in my boot.
