Many of them had chained themselves to that trailer. The easy move would have been to pull the whole kit and kaboodle, trailer, dirty chained hippies, all of it, off the road.

That's exactly what I would have done of I was a first responder. Dragging a human 20' over asphalt, then another 30 over that terrain, at a low speed, would do them no physical harm, might scare the shit out of them. It would also clear the road very quickly.

Had I been in that traffic jam, I would have four wheeled it through the desert.
