Default Geek question!

I'm far from a geek so I hope I explain this OK. (My cat knows more about computers that I do)

Hit a spot I do not normally go into (Network and internet connections) Shows a couple things with my wife's name on it, thats fine that is the name for the locked WiFi connections we use. She knows a little more than me so thats the way its set up.

Now today I hit that area and it says SamSung washer and a bunch of letters and that it is tied into the computer.

Hopefully some one can tell me what that means.(Wife does not know that was occurring) Why in hell is my front loader washing machine hitting my internet. What can it be doing and why is it doing it?

I realize I will get some screwball answers, no problem, have fun. For the people that hopefully will give me a real reason please tell me why stuff like this is happening, what is going out on the air. It appears its only tied in when the washer is running.

Thanks

Lots of newer appliances are "smart," meaning they have wireless internet capability and can connect to your network. Just because your computer "sees" them doesn't mean they're connected or doing anything. I just looked and my laptop can see 9 other devices, including the neighbor's wifi. That doesn't mean any of those are connected, just that my laptop can detect their signal.

Thank you sir! As a first class Luddite I'm not too happy about that potential invasion of my personal life, Your explanation makes me fell a little better!

They may make good electronics and cars, but NOT appliances. We had a brand new refrigerator that lasted only 2 years before I had to replace it. Ice maker went out and it started to make all these funny noises.

That info might have been more useful to the OP BEFORE he bought his washing machine, just sayin'.

Samsung is notorious for collecting as much data as it can on you and uploading it to Samsung's servers so the data can be mined and sold.

Either disable WiFi on your washing machnie or don't tell it what your WiFi password is so it can't actually connect.

OP needs to look up what an SSID is, it's purpose, and how it works

Ice makers in freezers are notoriously undependable. I replaced mine/ hired the guy four times in 19 years until I took the time to figure the system out and modify it myself.

Well that washer I wrote about is a replacement for the first one we bought.

They replaced the whole washer and did instillation as a warranty problem. The washer also came with a new unpaid warranty so its working OK for us.

I was not home (Wife was) when this replacement came in/was hooked up so if I knew it had some sort of WiFi hook in I would have asked plenty of questions.

My son who is 31 and an engineer geek has his whole house rigged up with wifi. Washer, dryer, refrigerator, microwave, garage door opener, front door lock, a half-dozen or so lights, all controlled by some gal's voice telling them the status of this or that, or reminding them to do something. I find it rather burdensome and unnecessary.

OP is computer dumb, that is a fact. I will lookup SSID. Still got to question why everything is so involved. OP is a firm believer in the KISS principal and thinks that old Murphy (of Murphys law) is really a closet optimist!

Not really, he just needs to do this:

True, but he was also asking the "why" part

Turning off wifi and turning off your WIFI SSID broadcast are two different things, though.

I have always had issues, and all issues with three GE Profile models.
The issue is once a tiny bit of water comes into play, all the cubes bond, and cannot get through the dispenser.
Even worse are the capacity on the french door models, about 1/3 of a side-by-side, in FL, with six in the house, it made ice that was gone in 30 minutes, with a 4-hour wait after.

Added an under-the-counter ice maker, makes 50+ pounds/day, no more ice problems.

Both AC units are on wifi, the wifey can set the temp remotely with phone.
I REFUSE to put anything else on wifi, as plenty happy when they are operating smoothly.

Wifey did set up a doggie camera, in front of living room TV, she can view them anytime, which now means I cannot bring my hoes into the home, setting up a futon in the garage.

Most smart items are now in the ecosystem of IOT (Internet of "Things") - even printers have micro-kernel operating systems and embedded web pages (and hackable). Welcome to modern life.

With my latest modifications I'm filling the ice dispenser in about a day. Since it rarely gets to 80F here I use very little ice, end up tossing it every few weeks since it absorbs odors from the food.

Neighbor Rick has a massive ice machine at his condo at Carolina Beach, all his neighbors are encouraged to use it.

All of this shit is listening to every word that you say. Especially your smart phone. Not just when you are "on the phone" but when it is near you. Eavesdropping. Just open up Google on your phone and see a series of click-bait on a lot of what you said in your last conversations.

On mine right now:
  • 1952 Chevolet barn find (wife and I were talking about classic cars during lunch)
  • Social Security 2025 COLA... (we had discussed when I should start claiming)
  • Finland is on the verge of... (wife had found my DNA test and noted that I had Norwegian ancestry)

I've never seen anything like that on my iPhone, nor has the wife. You need to change a setting.
