Default Collector Car Appreciation Day

Tomorrow (July 8) is Collector Car Appreciation Day.

So get them out of the garage and let folks appreciate them. Take some pictures and post them up.

I don't know if these would fall in line as collector cars, sold the '75 and now have the '81.

I didn't get mine out Friday. The solenoid on the '63 decided it was time for a heat-soak failure after a 90-minute cruise down to Southern MD on Monday. Thankfully, and to no great surprise, after it cooled off while we had lunch and beverages with friends for a coupla hours, it cranked as strongly as it always has. Then the PS pump started leaking in the garage a coupla days later.

New solenoid is here, and new pump and hoses are ordered. 'Til those arrive and I get them installed, she's grounded. I'll get the '94 out for some exercise tomorrow. The forecast is looking sweet, after a rainy day today, so I'll be dropping the ragtop, for sure.

Steve, I have a PS leak, too. New hoses so I don’t know what’s going on yet. Gotta get under and take a look.

Temps down here have hit “feels like” temps of 118 degrees so, even with Vintage Air I haven’t ventured out. Might take SinDee the Rat Terrier out for a ride before the sun comes up tomorrow.

Yeah, you are so right. It comes with the territory, and anybody who isn't ready to accept that and deal with it has no business getting into this hobby. Just makes it sweet when we solve the problems and get back behind the wheel!

Steve,

Sorry to hear your PS is also experiencing some incontinence issues. As I'm sure you're aware, there are many places these systems can spring leaks, owing to the somewhat Rube Goldberg nature of the design.

Best I can tell prior to disassembling anything, and after wiping everything down as well as I was able from underneath and monitoring the situation for a few days, mine appears to be seeping past the o-ring that seals the reservoir to the front casting.

I replaced the power cylinder and the extend and retract hoses last year, and was hoping for many years of trouble-free service afterward, but, that's life.

Let us know what you find when you dive under yours. Here's hoping it's something simple and relatively inexpensive, like a hose. BTW, various vendors sell kits that include all of the hoses in a single package, supposedly made in the USA using American rubber from either Gates or Goodyear. I just ordered one of these packages along with a new pump.

Live well,

Steve,

Last time I was under the car, I spotted a hose that was cross-threaded. But it was dry as a bone. I’ve been resisting the temptation to fix it.

I’m hoping my problem can be solv d by snugging up all the connections.

It seems near-miraculous that a cross-threaded flare fitting doesn't leak. You must be living right!

I'd suggest wiping everything down as best you can, and then watching for a few days, before wrenching on any fittings. Does it seem to leak only when under pressure, when it's at rest, or both?

It might also help to slide a sheet of cardboard under the area, and watch to see where the largest accumulation shows up. As you know, the stuff can and will sometime run some distance from the actual leak source before it drips off, but this can often give you a place to start looking.

Before a wipe-down, I was seeing fluid in multiple places. After a wipe-down, and without running the engine again for a few days, my drips were showing up under the pump, primarily dripping from the end one of the lower control arm bolts. Further inspection confirmed that it's the pump itself that's leaking.

Good luck with it.

Live well,
