Purdue
So far she likes what she sees. Says the people are so friendly. Spent over an hour with the Formula SAE team and found out the lead engineer is female, so she's pretty psyched.
We do a general campus tour tomorrow. |

Is she going to have a hard time deciding between minus temps in the winter, three feet of snow in Lafayette and the mild temps in Georgia. BTW. This a very mild winter around these parts this year.

She's ice skating as we speak, and so far, she loves playing in the snow and currently has had no issues breathing, which is a nice surprise. I think she's going to have a very tough decision between the two. I believe she finds out about scholarships here at Purdue tomorrow via email. Per GWiz, who coughs up the most money will likely factor in her decision. She REALLY wants to take the 5-year co-op approach, regardless of school.

I don't blame her on the Co-op thing at all. All the interns we have had from PU have been outstanding. All girls BTW. All Engineers, Industrial, Manufacturing and Process majors. It's a really great thing for the resume when she gets done.

You both should pony up some cash and make this interesting since she stated financial aid will play a significant role in decision. 😀

In all honesty, I just want to see her go to where it is best for her goals. But I'm a people person, and if she goes to GT, I get to meet people that I just talk to on here. Some friends of mine that I know personally that are on the forum can attest to the fact that I'm good folk. GWiz is going to make a positive impact wherever she goes. But we all know that. Datawiz has every right to be extremely proud. I know I would be.

I work with lots of Purdue grads at Cummins. Almost all the engineers went there. Added bonus, you get to hate on IU.

GWiz is truly torn, as she likes both schools a lot. Fortunately, the breathing has been zero issue and she really enjoys the snow. |

We made it home safely, and GWiz is still very much interested in Purdue. She and Patty are going to likely make a quick overnight stay at Georgia Tech in about 3 weekends (next two are taken). We all feel that experiencing both schools as close to back-to-back as possible is a prudent decision.
Decision will be made shortly after that. On a sad note, we did learn that G was not advanced for the Presidential scholarship (full ride) at Georgia Tech. Only 3 people per state make it to the next round. We never truly expected her to make it, and submission for it was done automatically with her early application. She does still qualify for 2 other types of scholarships. She's also still in the hunt for up to $16k per year from Purdue. These are certainly fun times. |

That said, you, your wife, and GWiz should and have every right to be proud. To me, Purdue is a stretch of a ride while GT is not. Sometimes having family that is not a million miles away is an advantage. If it was me, I'd probably put up a flagpole with her pic on it and say look what I did!! Ok, maybe I'm not quite that over the top, but you know we are all very proud. I still hope GT makes final cut so we can hang out. Keep us informed!

GT is more prestigious...barely. Purdue is #2 in job placement for engineers, GT is #1. From what we've seen, 100% of the FSAE engineers get work regardless, and those that co-op or intern have their jobs assigned well before they graduate. GWiz has spent her past 4 years dealing with cutthroat peers, and my gut says she'll go the way of "nice" people, meaning Purdue. Let's watch and see how that plays out. A GT acceptance is a bigger badge of honor than a Purdue acceptance, but she's realizing that at the end of the day, a nice job, in something that you truly want to do, that's made available at the end of the college run is the end game. If she can have some fun along the way and meet some like minded people in something she loves, then I'm betting Purdue gets the nod. Again, this is my personal speculation. What transpires from here on out is 100% her decision. |
