Default Rate my grips 1/10

I found some $5.00 Hi Power grip blanks on GB so I bought a couple. I have tried to make grips in the past, and this effort has been wildly more successful than in the past. They still need to be thinned out and final contoured/ stippled and finished but what do you all think so far?

Once they are completely fitted and finished I will lay out a panel on each using automotive fine line masking tape. Then I will use a 6 penny finishing nail, a tiny ball pein hammer and about 3 hours of tapping, upsetting the surface lightly with the nail. After I am happy with the texture I will daub a single coat of finish on each panel using an artist's brush so it is sealed. I use Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil applied with my fingertips, then polish the gloss down with 4/0 steel wool and paste furniture wax.

Do you have a set that shows that stippling?

These a practice set?

Yup, practice set. No stippling as yet but I have tried checkering and it is not for me. I have used stippling in stock refinish jobs in the past... you can achieve quite a range of looks depending what you use for a punch and how hard the stock is. Using the special Pennsylvania Walnut will be a bit in the future as it needs to dry for a couple months at least before I dare cut it into blanks.

My friend Ray is a gunsmith and did the "whole nine yards" ( kids/life got in the way). I tried checkering on a piece of scrap and it's a LOT harder than it seems it should be.

Damned near impossible... I bought used DemBart tooling but didn't spring for a checkering cradle. It just gave me a headache.
