Killer wood find for upcoming project
This 70-80' tree fell in the ice storm earlier this Winter and the property owner said if we moved it, we could have it.
Our only out of pocket has been milling cost. We found a portable mill and we helped him cut/stack. Total cost was $450 so far. Tree guy said it was Pin Oak but I don't think so. I think it's an oak, hard as hell and has gorgeous grain. Now we're stacking it with proper spacers to dry it. Goal is below 8% Scott Me and the tree The mill My buddy that helped me cut it up into 10' sections. We did 4/4 8/4 and then 4 pieces at 4" thick for a table. All slabs are 28-36" wide

Not a clue other than a dining room table and 2 end tables for the living room.
I may due a DIY set of bookshelf sized monitor speakers. (big audio nut since the mid 80s) Other than that we'll probably sell some once we figure out what species it is. It's very dense and heavy. A 3" thick cross section of it weighed almost 80 lbs. Mill guy said, given it's an oak, we'd have about $9k worth of it. (wholesale cost) Scott

My buddy's Dad, a German master carpenter and cabinet maker is advising us on drying procedures. We looked at kilns but they are pretty pricey and we'd have to move it over to them which is a lot of work. We have 45 different boards and the light ones are 100 lbs + each The heavy ones are 400 lbs or so. Scott

Definitely not red oak. That is easily discernible.
It's got a walnut type grain mixed with something else. It's not a wood I've ever worked with but pics do not do it justice. It's amazing looking stuff. Scott

They cut two 8" x 14" x 30' long beams to replace the original 8" x 14" x 58' long beam. By doing two pieces, they didn't have to jack up the entire house a foot and a half to slide it in place. After they finished, Roger said "I'm too old for this shit" |

Rule of thumb for air drying is 1 year per inch of thickness. |

Yes but we are not air drying. We are building a red neck kiln of sorts in his basement with large fans and an commercial size dehumidifier. (rated at 70 pints/day)
We're expecting 9-10 months for most of it. The 4" pieces are another story. We're still running numbers on that stuff. They are about 450 lbs and damn near killed buddy and I moving them by hand. Scott

Nothing insane as we won't be using a DSP for them but it would be nice to get a rigid frame with this grain of wood for cosmetics. Probably go with multi-ply baltic birch (at least 7 ply) and use this for the veneer although it would be 4/4 cut. I do have my Legacy Valors up for sale. Too bad I can't snag a few drivers from them. Scott

When my current house was under construction back in the late 90's, we had a lot of trees that had to be taken out, almost all actually. Most of them were removed by the builder, but two of them were too big for him to haul away. They were huge oaks. The trunks were probably four feet in diameter and they were at least 100' long with all the branches removed that could be hauled away. They sat in my front yard for a few months. I asked the contractor what the deal was, and he said it would cost me $1000 to have them hauled away. I told him to just leave them for now.
One day after work I was checking out the progress and a guy in a local engineering firm vehicle stopped and asked if I was the owner. Said yes, and he asked me "How much do you want for those two trees?" Uh, if you can just get them out of here you can have them. He said "Would today be OK?" Look, it's like 5:30 PM but sure, today's fine. Literally 30 minutes later there is a flatbed semi with a crane lifting these huge trees onto the bed. I asked the guy what he was going to do with them and he said his brother-in-law owned the saw mill in a nearby town and he'll probably give him $1500 or so for the trees. Totally worth it as far as I was concerned. Hope some nice cabinets got built out of all that wood. |
