Unless we pressure our politicians to bring our manufacturing home, nothing is going to change, and China will eventually rule the world. We still have time to cut the head off the snake without military intervention. Greed and religion cause all wars. Take that to the bank.

it's going to take huge tax incentives especially in unionized area. Do that and the left will start crying about fair share bullshit and blah blah blah 1% blah blah blah

People want consumer products like iPhones and televisions but are unwilling to pay the price for US made goods. Remember Magnavox, Zenith and RCA? Nothing will change as long as the US buyer demands cheaper products.

Taxing the shit out of anything made in China would level the field for American manufacturers.

Not just things like consumer electronics. All kinds of industrial products. I retired after a career in the rail supply industry. China virtually owns production of transit passenger cars in the US. Even though they have “manufacturing” facilities in the USA, these basically just put together components and subassembly made in China. There is a real fight going on by US railcar manufacturer’s as well as US suppliers to keep China out of the freight car market.

THERE is the deeply underLYING reason for the switch to China/etc for manufacturing......not so much the employment of AMERICANS at a living wage, BUT even with the cheap as shit total costs of goods made in China....we have to consider the SHIPPING time and $$$$$$ ......

AND if not for excessive local/state/fed .gov TAXES ......the costs of operating a plant making XXXXXX in this nation on our own soil would be far cheaper than importing anything from over the oceans.....period.....

gotta consider mfg. plant in X location, load boxes, load boxes onto air or boat, pay fuel/wages to get to USA location, then unload at some overloaded PORT OF ENTRY, now to handle freight to final distribution warehouses.....and beyond THAT, the distribution costs are not affected by point of origin of product sold......

SO the point being, IF the .gov didn't tax the living shit outta every plant here, and thereby encouraging the imports that hurt US CITIZENS.....and help the rest of the world just WHAT does the American CITIZEN get from this crap???

I think it is the parent companies and their boards who moved production offshore as costs rose in the US. Shareholder return at any cost. Greed (both corporate and shareholder) caused the downfall of American manufacturing; and will be the one thing that leads the US down the rabbit hole to second, then third world status as time goes by. Manufacturing might and the living wage that accompanies it is the ONLY way for any country to be truly great.

The problem is that if even one company sends their manufacturing to some third-world shithole then all the others have to do the same or else they cannot compete on price.

If we can pass a law requiring all manufacturing to be done here as a matter of National Security it would solve the problem entirely.

I still think in the back of my mind that China did this deliberately. Why? Remember the protests in Hong Kong? Then you throw in the tariffs that also pissed them off, and the possible solution was to release a virus that no only will quell Hong Kong, but also hit back at the US for the tariffs. Of course, get rid of China and the next area for cheap labor will be Africa.

I wish we would bring back MFG which was the heart and soul of this nation.

I think it’s because American consumers want Snap-on tools at Harbor Freight prices. You can tax the shit out of imported products, but Americans by and large are always looking for deals and will gravitate towards cheaper products by human nature. A lot of people blame corporate greed but I’ve seen first hand how Americans talk out of both sides of their mouth.

I’ve dealt for years with products that are largely American made. Think gun industry- one of the last bastions of American craft. Even then, consumers still try and find better deals and literally vote with their wallets and try to buy cheaper parts even when American made goods are clearly better. It’s really difficult to convince the public to buy American made goods because they are tightwads when it comes to spending.

Well, actually, most of it will just shift production to other low wage countries like Vietnam. We've seen this happen already with Trump's trade war against China. Yes, we hurt China, and brought them to the table to make an agreement, and were on the way to a phase 2 agreement when....oops, China 'accidentally' releases what is essentially viral warfare on not only us, but the world.

We were bringing some manufacturing jobs back prior to the crisis. We need to continue that, especially when it comes to medicine and medical supplies, things pretty important. Our country could probably survive if we suddenly had no TV's for sale. No drugs or capital medical equipment, in an emergency? Problematic.

Take the average cost of the American product of a certain type. Say a 21 cubic foot stainless refrigerator with water and ice dispenser, and tax the import at whatever level it takes to equal the average. No matter what country it comes from. If US prices drop, import prices drop. If US prices rise, import tax rises.

The problem is here, people actually want to make a wage that they can survive on. Over there, they are essentially slaves living in mud huts. There has to be a way to build stuff here that is not grossly over priced that American consumers will buy our own goods. "Made in America" used to really mean something....
