Around 1971, IIRC, I took a work-related flight from Newark to Phoenix, and was happy to see that the plane was a 747, which were pretty new at the time. I spoke with the captain, pilot, or whatever, for a few minutes, & took a couple of pictures of the instrumentation. I have no idea how anyone could keep track of all that crap. Also a picture of the upper level 1st class lounge. (I was a fed; no 1st class for me, took the pic after we landed.)

Guess I should post something before this thread drops to the 3rd or 4th page. Let me start by saying, this just looks like a bunch of clouds unless you view it large. It's not.

I recently upgraded my astrophotography camera to a purpose built monochrome astro camera. Without a lot of boring details, it provides sharper photos than a DSLR but requires the use of filters to capture red, green and blue light separately. The photos are merged to create a color image.

A mono camera also means one can use narrow band filters which block all but very small portions of the visible spectrum. This is a big deal as there are only a few days each month around the new moon when I can take photos. If it's cloudy during those nights... wait until next month. But Using one of these means I can capture images from my patio even though I live between Dallas and Ft. Worth and can barely see the big dipper on a good night. The filter blocks nearly all of the light pollution and this was taken when the moon was 3/4s full.

For now this image is just monochrome but I plan to merge it with color data at some point or maybe merge with data from two other narrow band filters I have then colors will be 'assigned' to each set of images. Many of the Hubble images are created in this manner. The colors aren't true to reality but they depict the object in a very detailed manner. So here's the image... the North American Nebula, aka, NGC7000. It appears to cover an area in the sky about the size of 4 moons. Though it's not evident in this photo, the NA nebula in a wider view looks remarkably like North America. If you use your imagination, the lower right quadrant of in this photo resembles the east coast and New England. In this photo, The Pelican Nebula is also partially visible at the top of the frame.
A lot of words to say, "Here's a black and white picture of a nebula." Post away if you have any questions. I'll answer if I can or just make something up.

If you asked me why I took this I would have no answer except I thought the clouds just looked cool....

Keller USED to be out in the sticks. Not any more!!!! I lived there for a spell back in the 90's in the neighborhood that was behind the Diamond grocery store, then lived in Trophy Club. Visiting there last year, we drove right past Trophy Club because we didn't recognize the area. Now Keller is in the middle of it. Wonder if the drive up 377 to Denton is still as fast as it used to be back in 1990.

We lived in the south part of Grapevine in the early 90s and I remember driving to Keller for a football game and thinking how far out and isolated it was. The growth here, and even more so on the west side of 377 and even I35 is unbelievable. It's good for property values but it it's way different than 2001 when we moved here.

And nope, the drive up 377 isn't so fast anymore but then neither is I35 thought it will soon have toll/express lanes from Ft. Worth to the Alliance Airport.

UGH, do not miss THAT. Traffic was insane. I don't mind heavy traffic, but when one is driving 70, the lane to your left is 90 an dther on the right is doing 40. Lots of weaving and creating of dangerous situations!!!!

Plus, I was in my wife's car and she would have been none too pleased if I had scratched it or been in a wreck. LOL

Man, do I wish!

There's an official light pollution scale that goes from 1-9, 1 being the darkest. I live in an '8'. It's a 2.5 hour drive to an area that's dark enough to effectively capture the Milky Way, galaxies, and nebula shots. Nearly all the space stuff I've posted was taken at a dark site that's rated a '2' or '3' on the scale. Only very remote areas get a rating of '1'.

Recently I got a set of filters that block all but very narrow slices of the visible spectrum. I can use those from the patio to capture some objects but it's a complicated process. The captured images aren't color images so color has to be assigned to each filter and blended during processing. The results can be beautiful but they don't accurately reflect the true colors of the object. Many of the published Hubble images use this method. Just learning how that all works and hope to have something publish here soon.

It will be great to set up on the patio and let the camera click away!

3rd row center stage to Live/Bush show at PNC in Jersey.
Not a Bush fan but they did a great set. Live hit it out of the park and Ed's vocals are still 95%.
