I simply cannot understand why a local contractor would cost more than if you did it yourself with no insurance, permit or licensing.

All of that is true and valid. But there are too many who just want to replace your old system instead of fixing it. Someone does the job correctly, and for a fair price deserves your business. Unfortunately I don't have the time or patience to sort through the mess.

Standard systems can deviate a degree or two from setpoint, and cause unwanted starting/stopping noises, especially on poorly designed duct systems. By adding a humidistat, you drive fan speed slower on a call for dehumidification, keeping a drier home at a slightly higher temp. It works really well, but again $$$$$.
That’s what the neighbor has. Works great. ROI for the price isn’t there.

I've found some have no idea how to fix alot of stuff so they just replace everything. I had to show furnace guy how to wire thermostat back to new unit and he was the smartest guy they had. I also had to show them how to adjust it so it'd run(fuel oil) properly. In this area fuel oil is a very common heateing source so no excuses.

In a city the size of San Antonio there are hundreds. Any good suggestions on how to weed your way through a mess like that?

Plus, without exception, of my personal friends that have replaced units, the replacements don't get their houses nearly cool enough. I have 4 friends or coworkers that have done replacements and all of them say the new refrigerants suck.
The “new” refrigerants don’t suck, the low ball installs do. A properly installed r410 system will cool exactly like an r22 system will. I 100% understand the financial part of this. It’s a LOT of money in the hottest part of a heat wave.

Here’s what salt air does to the condenser coil, the white is corroded aluminum. I used a fine wire brush to try to clean it, but the aluminum is so corroded it just shredded the fins so I gave up on that. I cleaned it as best I could with compressed air, but it’s obviously time for a new system.

Sort by Yelp Rating

In Montucky you generally have a choice of two depending on your city size. Sometimes three... but they're related

Son had two different cleaners and cleaned coils and something else and added some of that high dollar r22. He says the canooter value and flux capacitor is on th fritz and it’s 19 years old. Waiting on the new one now. Could be a few weeks.

Tell the government you are switching from a gas powered AC to electric. Send AOC the bill.
