Default How many dogs are 'too many', or does 'too many' really apply??

Once had three, now have two, two are nice, BUT I can handle more given my superior personality, except for that 'hostile posting' label on the peckerhead site.
Y'all know I got Ringo, trained killer, former special ops, he is about 9-not easy to figure on a pound rescue, so he may only have another 20 years left.
Dolly is the new edition, 6 months old, will be 70 pounds, Aussie Sheipherd and Poodle mix.
I am thinking mayne a couple German Shepherds, just need to know what I am getting into--will probably do a rescue so selection may be limited.
Who has more than 2, who has 2 and thinks its enough, who has 2 and wants less, who has none and could care less, who would rather watch painit dry.

All replies are welcome.

BTW, no need to have wifey weigh in, as Dolly just effing showed up one night, shitting all over my floor and tearing up my couch pillows, BUT she is getting better daily.

I had two Jack Russells til they passed a few years ago. Crazy little bitches (female dogs). Smarter than most people. Two was great. I never liked leaving them with a pet sitter so for their entire lives I didn't travel if I couldn't take them along.

More than two is a lot of work but if you can handle giving all your dogs enough attention, then get as many as you want and can handle.

Two dogs are already a lot of work, a third will add to that.

I decided that I do not need to travel much, or visit relatives, I am most comfortable under my roof, so being tied down without travel opportunities does not factor in--yeah, I save money not travelling!!

The maximum number of dogs in household needs to be based on affording the food and vet bills, ability to spend quality time with them and space.

For 2 different periods of time, we've had 3; other times 1 or 2. My wife trains & competes in AKC obedience with them. (Shetland Sheepdogs)

I agree with the poster above that it essentially depends on how much $ and time you can, or are willing to, spend relating to them.

We currently have 2, & my wife is making background noises about looking for a 3rd. I tell her that it's really up to her next husband, but I don't think she takes me seriously.

I probably don't want to know how much we spend on them each year, including vet visits, flea/tick/heartworm meds, food & treats, training classes & trial costs, etc.

So then, you won't go as far as to actually adopt Yad?

In the view of my homeowner's insurance company, 5 is too many. They limit me to no more than 4 dogs living on the property, or they will drop my insurance.

It really isn't a problem for me, as Miss Belle is plenty enough dog for me.

We have the two Labradors. I used to say if I had the property, time, and money, I’d have 10.

The fact that we are buying acreage has my wife worried.

Yad doesn't need adoption. He's a leader. A mentor. He inspires people.

He just doesn't want anything to do with them.

We had two huskies - Loki is 7 and Nukka will be 6 in a couple of months. They are brother and sister, but almost 2 years apart. In March, we doubled our pack by bringing home 2 puppies from Loki's littermate sister. We had planned on getting just one, Harley-Belle, but as we watched the puppies grow, it became clear that she and her brother were very close, as they were always playing together. So, we had to bring Bandit home too.

Walking 4 huskies several times a day can be challenging. As the puppies get bigger, they are getting stronger. But, I still have to show the who the boss is, and they usually toe the line.

To answer the question, sometimes 4 is the right amount, and sometimes, 4 is 4 too many. But I wouldn't trade them for anything, as I love them all dearly.
