Default ECU and wiring harness question?

I have a 1997 A4 that has a bad wiring harness and ECU. I have them both out of the car, the harness connector to the ECU has corrosion and is brittle. I'm looking for someone that has replaced theirs and might have some suggestions on the best way to do it. I would like to install the newer ECU (after the 97/98 years) would the newer wiring harness be a direct fit or would it need some modification if so would it be better to go back in with the 97 ECU and harness?

I found a place that will repair my harness and I think I know where to get a 97 ECU but everything is expensive.

Thanks for any suggestions.
