Woodworking... how hard could it be?
Extremely hard...... and hot. I had to of sweated my body weight from the Florida summer heat, and humidity.
Anyways here's the project at hand. I have had a IKEA bed frame for the past 10-11 years. I'm surprised it lasted this long, after all it's the cheap partical board, and I've easily dissasembled and reassembled 6or 8 times from moving rental to rental. one day I sat on the edge and the screws for the support slats ripped out, and plop. Down I and and the matress went. I figured if I was shopping for a new bed, might as well get a new matress. Damn matress's are expensive, and so are bed frames. I bought a new king, upgraded from a queen. I'm only one person, so probably unnecessary. Upon looking at new bed frame, cheapest I could find was $400, and it was no better than the IKEA frame I had before. It too may last 10 years but it was much much more than what I paid for the IKEA bed. I believe that frame was around $100. I figured I could make a niceer bed for the same or less in materials. $140 in materials here is the finished product. Not I bought. Metal frame from costco and built the wood to work with the metal frame. I also made it so I can easily make this a platform bed and could the needed slats out of some lumber if I want too later on. |

Nice use of floor jacks!
The bed frame and head board look nice, but those pillow cases dont go with the rest of the bedding set. Or the curtains. You need to raise your picture up a bit too. You also need to add at least two (3 would be better) more lag screws at all four corners. The first time you have a 'friend' stay over - that one is coming down too! |

A couple years ago, wife/I were hating our Ca. King bedding because we thought that stupid pillow top crap had caved in......was taking delivery of a new bed, and went to tear out the old one, moved the mattress, went to remove the two frame sections....and found the cheap crap framing had indeed broken up.....3 slats on my side, 2 on wife's.....I got some 3/4 plywood and 2x4's to support that cheap shit construction, and put the whole thing back together solid as a rock, and refused delivery on the new bed....

You have the skill, and probably much better tools
That's a very nice build. I went with the "Farmhouse" look, to blend in with some of the imperfections I knew I would have from off the shelf wood. Problem is I dont have a planer, so tried to buy the ready stain wood. It was all planed but some planks still had some warpage. The head board was made from standard 2x4s. Those took some work. |
