He showed up last week while I was out doing some errands. My wife said he was overly apologetic and gave her a check for the aggravation on it all.

The grief and trauma are probably still too fresh. It was a terribly upsetting experience, you've got to give him time to process all that pain and loss. He'll tell you when he's ready, when he can speak about the incident without breaking down in anguish.
