Default Homeless people

The homeless in Orange County became a hot topic recently with the clearing of the Santa Ana River Trail and, more recently, the Santa Ana Civic Center. The homeless advocates (and cherry-picked examples for the newspaper) would have us believe the homeless are all down on their luck and need compassion. "It's the high cost of living," they cry, and suggest we need to spend more money on handouts. No city wants to play host to a homeless shelter where the homeless will not go because you can't openly do drugs, etc.

Then you get this s**t...

Jamal Jackson, 49, is facing a first-degree murder charge in the death of 35-year-old Anthony Mele. He was being held in Ventura County jail on a $1.5 million bail. It was unclear if Jackson, who is also a convicted felon, had an attorney to speak on his behalf.

Mele and his wife were eating dinner with their 5-year-old daughter Wednesday at Aloha Steakhouse in Ventura. The girl was sitting on her father’s lap when prosecutors say Jackson walked up and stabbed Mele in the neck.

Prosecutor Richard Simon said patrons and a restaurant employee followed Jackson out of the restaurant, even though he still had the knife. They kept track of him until Ventura police arrived and arrested him.

Mele was taken to a hospital and died Thursday after being taken off life support.

“It’s horrible,” Simon said. “You don’t think you’re going to be killed when you go out to dinner at a nice restaurant with your family and you didn’t do anything.”

Simon said the two men had not interacted before the attack.

“He was just sitting there with his daughter in his lap,” Simon said. “You’re not supposed to die that way.”
The rest...

Maybe they'll all move to Stockton once the $500.00 a month universal base income ramps up fully.

Given that the vast majority of the Homeless are mentally ill I could never understand why Liberals want to let them wallow in miser ? They need to be hospitalized and treated.

Many municipalities cannot fully fund pensions for those who spent their careers working for a living. Just where do you think funding for indigent mental health care might come from? Please don't use the knee jerk response that the Fed should pony up since they don't even raise enough taxes now to pay their bills.

Unfortunately, and for the most part due to President Reagan, we no longer have places to put the nut jobs, and they wander the streets. Nut houses need to be up and running again.

Actually that decline started well before Reagan. As psychoactive medications became available the libs started with the "we don't need to imprison these people in mental hospitals, they just need medications" and it became a cuase celebre'. The use of the hospital model declined and declined. Reagan just put an end to pretending that it was being managed as it should have been.

In your opinion as an MD, should we go back to involuntary confinement for at least some of them?

While true, he cut funding, and these people just ended up on the streets. Here is a brief article, but in this country, some people just need to be put in a rubber room.

Yes, if they are a danger to themselves or other people.

That's pretty much the way things are now.

So you're saying the current system is preferable to what we had back prior to the advent of the newer psychoactive medications? In which all these people are free to build tent communities throwing used needles all over the ground and they poop wherever they want?

I have a fairly broad definition of what constitutes "danger to other people."

Incorrect. President Reagan reacted to the massive decline in Mental institutional commitment due tot he Involuntary commitment laws requiring most of the mentally ill to be released.

We need more mental health facilities and we need to change the law that allows anyone over the age of 18 that are diagnosed and mentally ill with violent tendencies to decide if they need the help or not.

How about ending means tested welfare? The biggest driver of violent crime in America. We kill two birds with one stone.

Only trouble I see is, how many nut jobs are going to commit themselves? It is definitely a double edged sword, but since the nut houses let out, look what we have.
