a few weeks ago, learned that a local House representative, had pre-filed a bill for the next session of the legislature (begins mid-January) that would ban so called "bump stocks". so i wrote an email, advising that i opposed this bill as being way too broad. yes, i read it.

we exchanged some additional emails and I invited him to go shooting, so at least he would have some idea what he is trying to ban.

back and forth we go, and now we have a date to hit the range.

we'll plan to shoot both pistols and rifles, and no doubt discuss what his bill says and what he intends.

relevant portion of the bill reads:

Unlawful possession of a rate of fire accelerator consists of a person knowingly possessing a firearm accessory or any other device, part or combination of parts that is designed or functions to accelerate the rate of fire of a semiautomatic firearm.

way, way too broad.

so, hopefully i can help educate him and either narrow his idea, or he'll conclude that the bill is pointless.

Good job, and that is a surprising response you received based on my experience.

I live in a small west coast town north of Seattle, and our city counselors have written policy for everything from global warming avoidance to world nuclear policy. Most of it is meaningless gibberish, but I've written letters regarding their own building codes, traffic 'calming' projects, and offered to take them on a field trip to demonstrate what I speak. Generally that offer frightens them, no takers ever.

i'll let you know how things go when it is done.

i observed that i likely would be against any gun restrictions, but that any lawmaker should have some working knowledge of what they want to regulate.

think bump stocks make guns shoot faster? maybe they do. but so can any number of things "help" one shoot faster.

muzzle weights, lighter triggers, compensators, optics - all things that are commonly used to make ordinary guns shoot faster in the hands of good shooters. and the proposed bill deals with "firearms", not just rifles.

should be interesting next week.

Be careful. Since the trigger finger (when used skillfully) can accelerate the rate of fire on a semi-automatic firearm by a considerable margin all by itself; said lawmaker might just deem all semiautomatics "unsafe" and try to restrict them (again).

The politician is going to let DAB do all the talking and write down all the things that need to be banned.

"Lighter trigger? Well, why didn't I think of that? Hold on while I add that to my list of scary things to ban."
