It is the fabricated notion, written in a book from people, generations after it supposedly happened. There is no proof of anything that happened in the Bible. If there is, I'd like to hear it from you. The rituals that occur in churches were made up by men that had never met God or Jesus, generations after Jesus walked the earth.

I have yet to see a direct correlation between a decline in "official" Catholics and those choosing to disavow their belief in Christ.

I have heard of Catholics who have stopped going to "organized religion" but still hold true to their faith in Christ.
What people believe is their own business and as long as they do it w/o affecting me, I have no problem with that. Just because I don't believe is no reason to deride someone that does, and visa - versa. Unfortunately, the Visa-Versa never happens in all "religions". Ergo, global problems and wars occur.
